2011 APA Arizona State Planning Conference

Call for Presentations

Are you…a planning innovator? …involved in cutting-edge research?

…interested in sharing ideas or projects? If so, we need you as a presenter at the APA Arizona 2011 State Planning Conference! This year’s theme is

“Practical Applications in Planning,” and we are seeking session proposals in the following tracks: o Regional Planning o Alternative Energy/Environmental Planning/Sustainable Future o The New Normal and Working Together o Rural Planning and Economic Development Tools o Healthy Communities o Planning Nuts and Bolts

We are focusing on success and ways to move forward in challenging economic and political environments to help our communities, the State of Arizona, and America build a stronger and more prosperous future in our rural, suburban and urban areas.

We will explore the opportunities before us to work collectively–in neighborhoods, towns, cities and regions– to pool limited resources, improve efficiency and effectiveness of planning in Arizona. It is time to actively lay the foundation for a new era of personal and professional responsibility.

Let us think differently about Arizona’s future while promoting smarter growth and sustainability. Join us at the APA Arizona State Planning Conference September 28-30, 2011.

Examples of possible presentation topics include, but are not limited to: o Sustainable Future - Alternative Energy, Green Building, Habitat Conservation, Solar Opportunities,

Climate Change o Transportation - Infrastructure Planning, Linking Transportation and Housing, Multi-Modal

Transportation o Natural Resources - Stormwater Management, Water Quality, Water Harvesting, Regional

Wastewater Planning o Technology - Use of GIS and Web Based Programs for Planning Purposes o Urban Issues - Community Gardens, “Zombie” Subdivisions, Zoning Codes and Health o Hot Zoning Topics - Medical Marijuana, Changes to General Plans and Zoning Ordinances o Administrative Procedures - Code Enforcement and Public Outreach o Economic Development - Grants Available, Success Stories, What’s Driving Planning in our

Community o Cultural Diversity - Public Schools Curriculum, Immigration Reform, Native American Tribal

Development o Professional Development - Sessions for New Planners, Finding a Job, Time Management

2011 APA Arizona State Planning Conference

Submittal Requirements

Submittals must provide the following information:

1. Session or workshop title: a short/catchy title that accurately reflects the focus of the session

2. Presenter Name/Credentials/Employer/Biography: This information, necessary for each presenter, is used in the conference brochure, the on-site program and for applying for certification maintenance credit.

3. Abstract: a short description of the session and relevance to the conference topic (no more than 100 words). This abstract will be used in the session selection process and, if session is selected, to generate interest in participating in the conference.

4. Take-Away Summary of the session: a short description of the session that will describe what the participant will take away from the session. This will be used in the on-site conference program (no more than 20 words)

As a conference presenter, you will contribute to advancing the planning profession and gain visibility and recognition as a leader by sharing your expertise. Planners, commissioners, and others from Arizona and beyond will be exposed to your expertise and more than 300 will attend this conference. Show how your innovative work will benefit them in the years to come!

Presentation proposals are due by 5:00 p.m. April 29, 2011. Late/incomplete proposals will not be considered. Your proposal must include all presenters.

Presentations should last 75 minutes and focus on the topics previously described.

Sessions are limited to a moderator and two speakers or a moderator and four-person panel maximum. A brief biography is required for all instructors.

Each meeting room will be equipped with a podium/microphone, panel table with microphones, LCD projector, electrical extension cord and screen. Moderators/presenters must provide their own

laptops.
