CHARACTER OF THE SEASON
2
There was no rain this winter. In the last 76 winter seasons there was only
one other, the winter of 2001-2002, when there was no rain recorded. Before the
season started, 1.30 inches of rain fell from October 16th through October 18th
at El Centro.
The winter season was dry with quite a range of temperatures from day to night.
The average monthly temperatures were 3 to 4 degrees above normal. But even
though afternoons were unusually warm, the nights were fairly cold in the 30s.
There were 16 nights with frost in colder agricultural areas. There 55 nights
with lettuce ice in coldest fields this winter.
November Afternoon high temperatures through the 26th of the month were in mid
to upper 80s. On the Saturday following Thanksgiving, an upper air trough of low
pressure from the northern Pacific caused strong west winds followed by a
sharply colder air mass. On the final 4 days of the month the nightly lows were
in the 30s. The first frost of the season was recorded on the morning of the
28th with lows down to 31 degrees. There was no rain all month.
December The afternoons were very mild the first 20 days of the month, however
the nights were cold with 17 nights with temperatures in 30s. 17 of the first 20
nights of the month had lettuce ice in colder fields. There was frost on the
mornings of the 5,6,7,15, and 16. The morning of the 16th was the coldest of
the season with lows of 24 to 33 degrees in agricultural areas. From the 21st
through the end of the end of the month temperatures were very mild. At
Christmas afternoons temperatures were near 80. There was no rain all month.
January
Mild days and rather cold nights all month with no rain. There were 21
nights in the 30s with lettuce ice. Frost was recorded on the mornings of
January 11, 12, 17, 20, 21, and 22nd. Lows were in the low 30s except the
temperatures were 26 to 29 in colder areas on the mornings of January 21 and 22.
February The afternoons were unusually warm and the nights rather cold all
month long. Many afternoons were in the low 80s. There were large day to night
ranges in temperatures all month. There were 13 nights with temperatures in the
30s with lettuce ice in colder fields. The last frost of the season was on
February 23rd this winter. Winds gusted to 45 mph at 4 pm on the afternoon of
February the fifteenth at the Imperial Airport. There was no measurable rain all
month.

Forecast Distribution and Services
In cooperation with the Agricultural Commissioner of Imperial County,
this winter Fruit Frost Report has been created annually by a meteorologist
in Imperial County. This is the 76th year of data for this report. It has
been the goal of this local Frost Service to issue a weather forecast, which is
as timely and detailed and as accurate as the science can provide. It takes the
cooperation of the meteorologist, working closely with the Agricultural
Commissioners Office, the University Extension, the local growers and growers
groups, the harvest and packing industry and all of the local media to make this
service timely and meaningful.
Agricultural weather was distributed as follows…
Radio Stations Recordings for
KXO AM & FM
El Centro
A summary of the West Coast weather pattern along with a 48 hour detailed
agricultural forecast and a 3-5 day outlook was placed on automatic answering
devices at 6:05 AM, 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM every day from November 15th through
the last day of February. On days with unusual weather, the forecasts were
updated more often.
Forecast recording can be reached at 760 352-3360. 3368 and 3369.
At 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. forecasts were placed on the IID web site at
..www.iid.com… and on Imperial County Agricultural Commissioner web site.
Lettuce ice measurements are taken on cold nights by inspectors of the
Agricultural Commissioners Office and relayed to the weather office
at 6:00 a.m. Hydrographers from the Imperial Irrigation District relay
5:30 AM temperatures from the northern and eastern parts of the Valley.
Temperature data was received from the 3 automated DWR Cimis stations,
4 Imperial County ARB Met One stations.
Evaporation and soil temperature data are part of the daily forecast
information.
