Ashlee Auchter 4-5yr olds Assistants: Tamara Sprague, Melissa Fleetwood Theme: Fish, Whales and Dolphins Summer Week 10: July 23- July 27 Monday: July 23 Educational Kids Video: “A Day with the Whales” Early Literacy: Whales and Dolphins. Today we will be watching 15 minutes of an educational children’s video that talks about different types of whales, their environments and how smart whales are. The children will be learning simple facts about the size, body parts and food source for whales. Sometimes we can see whales and dolphins in captivity; this means we can visit SeaWorld or an aquarium to see these amazing animals up close. Small Group Circle Time: Continued discussion about our video. Whales and dolphins are considered mammals which means they are warm blooded and have hair just like we do, but what is different about people and whales? The children will identify things that are similar and different between whales and people. HWT: We are still completing 2 letters a week from the HWT curriculum. We will begin with letter “Q”. Each child will receive a trace sheet they will complete and identify the letter and a word or item that begins with letter “Q”. Once we’ve completed our trace sheet we will trace the letter on our Leap Pad scribble and write. “Start at the top in the middle, big curve to the bottom, big curve to the top, stop, jump to the middle, little line slides down.” Ashlee Auchter 4-5yr olds Assistants: Tamara Sprague, Melissa Fleetwood Theme: Fish, Whales and Dolphins Summer Week 10: July 23- July 27 Tuesday: July 24 Educational Kids Video: “A Day with the Whales” Early Literacy: Whales. Today we will complete our educational video. Today the video will cover whales and other animals that live in cold and warm climates. Whales live in the oceans around the world. Which ocean is cold? Can we look at a globe and guess? What types of whales live in cold water, What types of whales live in warmer water? Deep oceans are dark blue in color and the water gets colder as you go down to the ocean floor, why? If the sun cannot reach the water down below how will the whales see? Small Group Circle Time: Whales and Sharks. Whales and sharks are at the top of the food chain when we talk about ocean animals. Today we will discuss which animals live in the ocean and whether or not they are a predator or prey. We will complete our discussion by playing predator VS prey bingo. HWT: Today we will complete letter “Q” by reading “My Little “Q” Book” By: Jane Belk Moncure. We will work together as a team and create a list of the different items or words that begin with letter “Q”, and then the children will need to identify the letter sound and choose an item from our book or the list we made to draw and tell a short story about. “Start at the top in the middle, big curve to the bottom, big curve to the top, stop, jump to the middle, little line slides down.” Ashlee Auchter 4-5yr olds Assistants: Tamara Sprague, Melissa Fleetwood Theme: Fish, Whales and Dolphins Summer Week 10: July 23- July 27 Wednesday: July 25 Book: “Swimmy” By: Leo Lionni Early Literacy: Swimmy the little fish learns important lessons as he swims through the ocean looking for a new school of fish to join. What creatures did he meet? Swimmy tells the little fish he finds to come with him and have fun but the little fish are too scared to go because they do not want to be eaten. Swimmy thinks of a plan and the fish are free to swim the ocean again. Should we give up because something is kind of hard to do? What can we do to help others and ourselves when things get difficult? Small Group Circle Time: Our extension activity will be creating fancy fish. We will complete this art activity using small paper plates, tissue paper, glue, scissors, googly eyes and glitter. Then we will display the fish together in our classroom as “Our School of Fish”. HWT: We are still completing 2 letters a week from the HWT curriculum. Our second letter this week is “G”. Each child will receive a trace sheet they will complete and identify the letter and a word or item that begins with letter “G”. Once we’ve completed our trace sheet we will trace the letter on our Leap Pad scribble and write. “Start at the top in the middle, big curve to the bottom, little line up, jump to the corner, little line across the top.” Ashlee Auchter 4-5yr olds Assistants: Tamara Sprague, Melissa Fleetwood Theme: Fish, Whales and Dolphins Summer Week 10: July 23- July 27 Thursday: July 26 Book: “Sails” By: Don Early Literacy: Today we will read a story about sailing the ocean on a sailboat. We learned in our balance and motion book yesterday that some things take different sources of fuel to move; kites and sailboats need the wind, cars, trucks and planes need gasoline, people use food as their body’s fuel source. Sailboats have two sources for movement, a motor and sails. When a boat has sails up what is helping it, the wind or gas? When a boat has sails down what is helping it, gas or the wind? Small Group Circle Time: Our extension activity will be creating shells, starfish and seaweed to add to the ocean scene we are creating. Each child will be given a pre-cut item, and then we will add colored sand to the items that should be rough. The seaweed will be made using tissue paper, and glue. To make is smooth and strong just like the sea kelp we find in the ocean. HWT: Today we will complete letter “G” by reading “My Little “G” Book” By: Jane Belk Moncure. Cooking will not be taking place today since we have a special guest coming to speak and complete an activity. Morning Circle Time: Show and Share
