Building Math Capacity - the Math Coaching Initiative 2008-2009 Agreement Among Principal, Math Building Coach and District Math Staff (Elementary Executive Director will help support this initiative) .25 Math Coach - (hired as a .5 Literacy and Math Coach) Principal 1 semester: create a building Action Plan that outlines the work, reflection and plans for Math BC work. Revisit for reflecting at beginning of 2nd semester. .25 Math Building Coach (BC) 1 semester: co-creates a building Action Plan that outlines the work, reflection and plans for Math BC work. Revisit for reflecting at beginning of 2nd semester. District Math Staff 1 semester: co-creates a building Action Plan that outlines the work, reflection and plans for Math BC work. Revisit for reflecting at beginning of 2nd semester. Support Math BC responsibilities and philosophy of coaching: support “intelligent instructivism” to build school math capacity – NOT to fix a teacher 1. Formal Coaching: 1 teacher during a 4 weeks residency to monitor EM implementation and foster reflection of “intelligent instructivism”. This would occur during 4+ months during the year. 2.Informal Coaching * model/observe for feedback * brainstorm * resource support 3. Grade Level Team Meetings: pacing, interventions, student work, End of Unit Assess Supports the strategies in From Rage to Hope when doing formal and informal coaching: heterogeneous grouping learning styles identified and used multiple options for teaching and reteaching standards(in flex groups) are used 1. Demonstrate a willingness to acquire the necessary skill set to further coaching knowledge and skills by attending monthly Math Coaches Workshops 2. Will attend a monthly Math Coaching Network Cluster to demonstrate/observe math formal coaching. Reflection will be expected as all improve their coaching skills. Participate in rotating sub schedule, only if necessary 1. Provide documents Principals and Building Coaches need to implement EM and promote “intelligent instructivism” 2. Meet with Math BC three times a year for meta coaching Attend a half-day monthly Math Coaches Cluster Network PD Provide support to half-day monthly Math Coaches Cluster st Monitor the school’s implementation of the strategies in From Rage to Hope: heterogeneous grouping learning styles identified and used multiple options for teaching and reteaching are available and used Support attendance of Math BC to participate in a half-day monthly Math Coaches Workshop Ensure the Math BC will be in a rotation sub schedule, only if necessary Allow Math BC to attend a halfday monthly Math Coaches st st Provides materials to support the strategies in From Rage to Hope: learning styles surveys multiple options for teaching and reteaching standards (in flex groups) are identified Provide a monthly Math Coaches Workshop including the topics of: 1. PLCs 2. Coaching 3. Math Content 4. Leadership NA Cluster Network PD Network (observing other Math Coaches doing formal coaching, etc) 1. When requested, provide PD support to Math Coach PLCs: build their PD capacity, present PD at the Math BC’s school, attend school PLC meeting or staff meeting 2. Provide documents Principals and Building Coaches need to facilitate PLC support When requested, help create or support Math BC presentation of PD as identified in LW feedback report Guide Mission, Vision, Values. and Goals PD as teachers engage in a PLC Facilitate PLC work in the building *consistently keeps the school’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals as the focus Leads Learning Walks and includes Math BC in any math PD identified in LW feedback report Learning Walk participation and prepare PD as identified in LW feedback report Consults with Math BC to determine, support, and create at least one Model Mathematics Classroom in your building Meet monthly with Math BC and Leadership Team members to interpret and understand data, reflecting on how to promote “student learning’ of math Observe Math BC doing formal coaching at least one time per semester Maintain communication with Math BC and District Math Staff to keep updated on the coaching work. Supports Math BC and other school math instruction staff in attending math content PD Coaches at least one teacher to set up a Model Mathematics Classroom that helps build school capacity for mathematics instruction. Meet monthly with Principal and Leadership Team to interpret and understand data, reflecting on how to promote “student learning” of math Be observed by Principal doing formal coaching at least one time per semester Maintain communication with Principal and District Math Staff to keep updated on the coaching work Provides support for creating a Model Classroom as requested. Will attend content training and math institutes provided by the district. Act as liaison to national math consultant to create and provide appropriate district wide content PD for coaches and teachers Provide data and support to questions/comments/reflections that arise in Building Leadership Team meetings to promote “student learning” of math Accompany Principal and Math BC during formal coaching observation, if requested Maintain communication with Principal and Math BC to keep updated on the coaching work
