Barr ’68 (government) Senior Partner, Barr & Cole Attorneys at Law, Newton Highlands, MA Henry Barr is a senior partner in the law firm of Barr & Cole and is also president and director for the real estate investment company, Duco Associates, Inc. He was formerly an attorney with Looney & Grossman and the Administrator of Courts for the Trial Courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Henry is a lifetime member of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation and a former president of the Massachusetts Lender’s Association. He has served as chairman of the Massachusetts Interpreter Services Committee and the Massachusetts Court Clinic Services Committee and as acting chair of the Massachusetts Child Support Guidelines Committee. He also serves on the Community Advisory Board of the Grand Circle Foundation, president of the Board of Trustees of the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation, and is the past president of the West End House Boys and Girls Club in Allston, where he continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors. Henry’s commitment to UMass Amherst is extensive; he has served on the board of directors for the UMass Amherst Alumni Association. He was a member of the Advisory Board at the Center for Public Policy and Administration within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Currently he serves as a director of the University of Massachusetts Amherst Foundation. In 2012, Henry was recognized with the UMass Amherst Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Henry graduated from UMass Amherst in 1968 with a BA in Government (now Political Science). He earned a law degree from Boston College Law School in 1972 and an MBA from Suffolk University in 1978. He completed the Senior Executive Program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1980. Henry and his wife, Andrea (’68 Education), have two grown sons and they reside in Framingham, MA. Scott Burke ’84 (psychology) Partner, Morrison, Mahoney LLP, Boston Scott Douglas Burke, is a partner in the Boston office of Morrison Mahoney LLP. He has been with the firm since 1990 and a partner since 1995. Scott primarily concentrates in the civil defense of non-medical professionals against claims of malpractice and improper employment practices. Scott chairs the non-medical professional liability group of the firm's Boston office. Along with his trial work, Scott serves on the Massachusetts Bar Association's Committee on Professional Ethics, the MBA's Education Committee and the Ethics Curriculum Committee of MCLE. Prior to joining Morrison, Mahoney LLP, Scott served as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan in the office of Robert M. Morgenthau. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York, and has tried cases in additional states. Sean Dandley ’85 (journalism) CEO, DSCI Corporation, Waltham, MA Sean Dandley is President and CEO of DSCI Corporation, a telecommunications firm that he founded in 2000. While the company began initially by reselling telecommuni-cations services from other service providers, in 2005 they built their own carrier-class IP network. The company now serves more than 1,100 customers, primarily in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, but extends its reach to over 600 cities in 60 countries on 6 continents. Besides being tops in customer service, DSCI has been named one of the best places to work in the region—twice—by Boston Business Journal. Prior to starting DSCI, Sean worked for New England Telephone and then NYNEX/Bell Atlantic agents, focused on sales and sales management of services to small and medium enterprises. Looking for a new challenge, Sean and his business associates started their first start-up, Digital Signal, in 1997. The following year, he was part of the team that created Digital Broadband, which purchased Digital Signal. Sean completed his B.A. in Journalism at UMass Amherst in 1985 and his M.B.A. from Bentley University in 1987. He and his wife Jayne ’85 (nursing) have two children who are also attending UMass Amherst, Erinn is studying bioengineering and Michael is in the studio arts program. Last updated 2/12/16 4 Dan Feder ’84 (political science) Managing Director, Washington University Investment Management Co Dan is the Senior Investment Manager for Private Equity and Venture Capital at Covariance Capital Management. Dan has worked in the private securities industry for 25 years as an attorney and an investor. Most recently, Dan was the Managing Director of Private Markets for the Sequoia Capital Heritage Fund where he helped develop an endowment style (multi-asset class) investment management service sponsored by Sequoia Capital. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital, Dan was the Managing Director of private equity and venture capital with the Princeton University Investment Company (“Princo”) – the investment office for Princeton University’s endowment. At Princo, Dan led the development of a $4.0 billion global private equity and venture capital portfolio, including 168 fund commitments in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Australia. Approximately half of the manager relationships established by Dan were instituted with newly-formed firms or firms raising their first institutional capital. Dan has served on the Advisory Boards of over 60 private equity and venture capital funds. Dan began his career as an attorney in the area of corporate finance (private placements, buyouts, project financings, securitizations, bankruptcies, and corporate reorganizations). After serving as in-house counsel at CIGNA Investment Management, Dan joined the investment team at CIGNA as a Vice-President, where he completed a broad range of transactions, including control buyouts of middle market manufacturing and service companies. Prior to joining Princo, Dan was a Portfolio Manager in the private equity area at CalPERS. Dan holds a B.A. cum laude in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts (1984), a J.D. cum laude from the Boston University School of Law (1987), and an M.A. in Economics from Trinity College (1997). He is a Fellow in the American College of Investment Counsel and has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Covariance Capital Management is an independent subsidiary of TIAA-CREF that provides outsourced investment management services to clients with long investments horizons, such as endowments and foundations. Denise A. Gaudet ’77 (Economics) Deputy General Counsel, Santander Bank, N.A. Denise Gaudet is an attorney who has practiced in the financial services sector for over 30 years. She is currently Deputy General Counsel of Santander Bank, N.A., a national bank owned by the Spanish company, Banco Santander, one of the largest financial services providers in the world. She manages a team of approximately 45 attorneys and paralegals. Prior to her current position at Santander Bank, formerly known as Sovereign Bank, Denise worked for The First National Bank of Boston, Shawmut Bank, N.A. and Fleet National Bank. Benjamin Happ, CFA ’98 (psychology) Head of Marketing & Investor Relations, Myriad Asset Management Benjamin Happ '98 (psychology) has recently relocated to Boston, where he is responsible for coverage of international hedge fund clients of Credit Suisse. Prior to this, he was the Head of Capital Services, Asia Pacific, at Credit Suisse in Hong Kong. In this role he advises both institutional investors on their hedge fund investments and hedge fund managers on their capital raising activity. Prior to this, he was the head of business development at Abax Global Capital, a Hong Kong-based hedge fund focused on private transactions across Greater China and South Asia. In this role, was responsible for capital raising, investor relationships, and strategic business development. Prior to this, Happ was a vice president of Morgan Stanley Investment Management in New York, and was responsible for strategic acquisitions of alternative investment managers for the firm. Before this, but still at Morgan Stanley, he was a senior member of the Capital Introductions group in Prime Brokerage, serving as the lead advisor for several multibillion dollar hedge-fund launches. He was previously a vice president of Allianz Hedge Fund Partners, the multi-manager hedge fund platform of Allianz Group. In this role, he was responsible for due diligence and investment recommendations for global fixed income strategies. Before that, he had responsibility for long/short equity-related investments in Europe and Asia. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Happ is also member of Phi Beta Kappa. As an undergraduate, he was awarded the American Psychological Association's Psi Chi National Convention Research Award for his thesis work. This research was later published with Professor Bob Feldman and James Forrest in Basic and Applied Social Psychology (June 2002). In 2001, Happ earned an MA in psychology from the University of California Berkeley. His studies of behavioral economics and investor decision-making were funded by the National Science Foundation. While a graduate student, he also was a Visiting Scholar at Beijing University in China. He lives in Acton, MA, with his wife Amy and their daughters Abigail and Charlotte Jane. Hertz ’69 (government, ’73 MPA) Former Executive Vice President, Massachusetts Port Authority George Hertz is the recently retired executive vice president for the Massachusetts Port Authority. He began and ended his long and successful career in the public sector, starting off in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Human Services and Department of Mental Health. From 1979-1982 he served as budget director for the Commonwealth. From there he went on to a variety of positions in the private sector. He was managing director and senior vice president with Fidelity Capital of Boston; president of Advanced Mobilecomm; senior project manager of Fidelity Investments; president of Phase One Development Corporation; vice president and project manager with Zip Call. He also served as vice president of operations for a period of time in between two stints as executive vice president at MassPort. To express his commitment to public service and to honor the memory of his father, a wellknown community leader in Holyoke, George created the Phillip Hertz Memorial Scholarship at UMass Amherst. This award is given to a graduate student who is committed to a career in public service. George earned his BA in government (now political science) from UMass Amherst in 1969 and his Master of Public Administration in 1973. George lives in Westwood, MA with his wife, Camilla, and their son, Jacob. Lew Hoff ’62 (economics) President and CEO of Bartizan Corporation, Yonkers, NY Lew Hoff is president & CEO of Yonkers-based Bartizan Corporation. Before co-founding Bartizan Corporation in 1970, Lew Hoff graduated from University of Massachusetts with a BA in Economics and attended Fordham Graduate School of Business. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force officers’ training school and served more than four years active duty as an Air Force Officer. Prior to founding Bartizan, he worked for United Airlines, served as Assistant Director of the American Management Association's New York Management Center and as National Sales Manager for ICV, Inc. Lew is also Chairman of AddressographBartizan, the world's largest manufacturer of credit card data recorders. Lew and his wife Hannah are charter members of the newly created UMass Amherst Parent and Family Council, connecting with donors and helping to plan and staff Family Weekend in April. Hoff is also engaged with the Employer Networking Night run by Career Services. Kristen A. Keel ’88 (psychology, ’92 MPA) Former Vice President for Financial Planning and Analysis, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare In June 2006, Kristen retired from her position as vice president for financial planning and analysis at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in Wellesley, Massachusetts. While in this role, she helped clean up the health plan's books, reformed its business processes and established a "credible 2000 budget to allow us to get out of receivership." Kristen’s diligent attention allowed Harvard Pilgrim to turn its fortunes around, earning about $36 million in 2002. In Last updated 2/12/16 7 2004, Kristen was selected by the Boston Business Journal as one of Boston’s 40 business people under 40. Prior to her success at Harvard Pilgrim, Kristen served as the undersecretary for the Executive Office of Administration and Finance for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The road to this position started at UMass Amherst. In 1991 Kristen was working on her master’s degree. The Commonwealth was in a fiscal crisis when she resolved to volunteer at the Executive Office of Administration and Finance to experience government functioning from the trenches. She worked as a capital budget analyst. "I decided, what better way to write my thesis?" she says. Her thesis project led to an eight-year stretch in state government, first as director of finance within the Budget Bureau and then as undersecretary. She left in 1999 to join Harvard Pilgrim to sort out another financial crisis. Kristen is happily retired and spends her time traveling, building furniture and renovating her 1950s colonial home. She and her husband, Tom Todorow, reside in suburban Philadelphia. Alan LeBovidge ’64 (Economics) Former CFO, Brandot International; former executive director, Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Alan LeBovidge is currently retired, having had a long and varied career in the both the public and private sectors. Most recently, Alan LeBovidge was the chief financial officer for Brandot International, an investment company specializing in joint venture partnerships in the apparel and textile industry. Prior to this, he served as executive director of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority from 2007 to 2009 after serving as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue – having been coaxed out of retirement in 2001 by Governor Jane Swift. Alan retired in 1999 after a 32-year career at the firm that started as Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery and is now PricewaterhouseCoopers. He was a partner in the firm, which is considered one of the Big Four accounting firms, for 25 years. He held a number of management positions including Vice Chairman, Taxes for five years. In that capacity he oversaw the national tax operations for then Coopers & Lybrand and managed about 3,000 tax professionals. Before being named partner, Alan spent seven years with as a tax professional serving private and public companies in both state and federal tax matters. He graduated from the UMass Amherst in 1964 with a BA in economics. He earned a law degree from Boston College School of Law in 1967. He received a master of laws in taxation from Boston University and certified public accountant’s certificate from the Commonwealth. Alan is a trustee and head of the audit committee at both the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Lawrence General Hospital. Savage ’92 (political science) Partner, Choate Hall & Stewart, Boston, MA Christine G. Savage, partner, is the Chair of Choate, Hall & Stewart’s Health Care Practice Group and also is a member of the Firm’s Government Enforcement & Compliance Practice. She also served on the Firm’s Executive Committee for five years. Christine represents a wide variety of clients including hospitals and academic medical centers, hospices, home health agencies, long-term care providers, physician groups, and ancillary service providers to address complex compliance and regulatory problems and developing practical business solutions. Christine also spends a significant portion of her time defending cases brought under the False Claims Act and anti-kickback laws and providing strategic counseling and focused health care advice to private equity clients of the Firm. Additionally, Christine has experience with human subjects research, federal grants and IRB related matters. Christine is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, and the Boston Bar Association’s Health Law Steering Committee. She previously served on the Board of Trustees for the Massachusetts Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. She currently serves as a member of the Partners Healthcare Institutional Review Board and as a trustee for the Elisabeth M. Todaro Fund. She was named to the Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 in 2007 and was named a Top Woman of Law by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly in 2010. While at UMass Amherst, Christine was selected as a Truman Scholar (1991). She received her B.A. from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1992 cum laude, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1995 cum laude. Julia Sears (communication) Executive Development Manager, TIAA-CREF Julia is an executive technology leader responsible for client facing technology at TIAACREF, a Fourtune-100 non-for-profit company dedicated to the investments and goals of over 15,000 universities, medical and research facilities across the United States. Previously at NASDAQ OMX, Julia held a number of senior roles during her 15-year tenure. Julia was Head of the Risk Management business and cloud solutions; led the launch of the Global Index platform across 45 countries; and, in 2006, was an early adopter of mobile and cloud technology. Julia and her team developed the award-winning Market Replay, patented the technology for board-book-digital-distribution, Directors Desk, and designed the top-rated financial Qfolio application at the request of Apple for the first iPad launch. Born in London and raised in New England, Julia attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she studied Communications, resided in India and then entered into her first role at The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. in 1999. Elizabeth Segers ’81 (economics) Empirical Research Partners LLC Elizabeth R. Segers is a partner at Empirical Research Partners in NYC, a broker-dealer founded in 2002 with the aim of providing high quality research on a wide range of topics of interest to institutional investors. Beth’s focus is on the money management business. She joined ERP in May 2009. Beth also maintains a private research consulting practice of her own. Prior to Empirical, Beth was a managing director and head of Market Planning and Development at Putnam Investments where she worked for nearly a dozen years. Prior to Putnam, Beth worked in banking and at Fidelity Investments, always focused on market research and investor behavior. Ms. Segers has over 28 years experience in the investment and banking industries. She currently holds her NASD Series 7 license and was recently named by Pensions and Investments as one of the top 25 people to watch in the next 25 years. Within the community, Beth's passion has been serving as a mentor and math tutor in urban education for many years. Beth received her B.A. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Rachel White ’91 (Social Thought and Political Economy) The Guardian Rachel White is the Director, Philanthropic & Strategic Partnerships based in Washington DC. White leads the organization’s relationships with a range of philanthropic partners, building on the Guardian’s longstanding work in this area, and identifying new opportunities to increase the impact of its award-winning, independent journalism around the world. Prior to joining The Guardian, she was with New America where she was Senior Vice President and Director of New America Live, and lead development and strategic partnership efforts with private foundations, individuals, corporations, academia, media, and government. White also worked for the World Wildlife Fund where she played a lead role in securing funding for their Living Planet Campaign.
