Pulmonary Volumes

Lab 3, KNR 280

For this lab you will measure three pulmonary volumes and calculate two others. The values you obtain will be used as the results for your third lab report.

1.

For all measures, you must either hold your nose closed or wear a nose clip.

2.

You will also need to use one disposable mouthpiece for all measures.

3.

Discard the mouthpiece after you have taken the last measure.

4.

Use the same blue sheet on the spirometer for all measures.

5.

Three trials should be taken for each volume. Use the average of the three trials.

6.

Do not breathe in while on the mouthpiece.

Volume 1: Tidal Volume (TV). Men = 600ml Women = 500 ml

Take a few normal breaths in and out. Take a normal breath in. Place your mouth over the mouthpiece making sure there is a good seal with the lips. Take a normal breath out and record the volume.

Volume 2: Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV). Men = 1200 ml Women = 800 ml

Take a few normal breaths in and out. Take a normal breath out. Place your mouth over the mouthpiece making sure there is a good seal with the lips. Forcefully exhale out the remaining air and record the volume.

Volume 3: Forced Vital Capacity (FVC). Men = 4800 ml Women = 3200 ml

Take a few normal breaths in and out. Take a maximal breath in. Place your mouth over the mouthpiece making sure there is a good seal with the lips. Forcefully exhale out all the air and record the volume.

Volume 4: Residual Volume (RV). Men = 1200 ml Women = 1000 ml

Use the correct equation to calculate residual volume:

Men RV = FVC x 24%

Women RV = FVC x 28%

Volume 5: Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV). Men = 3000 ml Women = 1900 ml

IRV = FVC x 65%
