CHAPTER 4
OTHER PASSMORE CONNECTIONS
In 1929 Alfred E. Passmore, a collateral descendant of this Passmore line commissioned
research by Chas. E. Bernau. A copy of his work entitled “Pedigree of the Passmores of
Passmore Hayes Devon” is located both the WCSL (ref S929.2PAS) and in Tiverton Museum
(ref TM/89/1375/1). It traces Passmore lines back to the 13C. In certain areas it overlaps
the research done by ourselves and we have drawn upon it as appropriate.
The descent to Alfred E. Passmore is from Francis Wolf Passmore, born 1782, brother of the
Christopher born 1784 whose history forms chapter two of this book. We have included in
the history below of Francis Wolf Passmore information from Bernau’s Pedigree.
PASSMORE OF PASSMORE HAYES, DEVON
As mentioned earlier we came across a Passmore pedigree researched in 1929 by Chas. A.
Bernau. He traced Passmores back to one Ralph Passemer who witnessed a grant made by
Robert FitzUrse to his brother of land in Williton in Somerset. Also witnesses to this grant
were Hugh de Moreville and Richard Brito who were both associated with the murder of
Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170.
Bernau drew up a pedigree from [....] Passmore of Passmore Hayes which in 1929 was a
mere collection of cottages a few miles north of Tiverton, Devon. Nine generations later the
pedigree has reached one Christopher Passmore, son of Nicholas & Elizabeth Passmore.
This Christopher was baptised on May 12th 1700 in the parish of St Sidwell in Exeter. Bernau
then goes on to give this Christopher(700) as the father of ten children, the oldest being
Christopher baptised 25th May 1750 in St Sidwell with another child William, baptised 28th
February 1759, also at St Sidwell. Other children were baptised with the youngest being a
Thomas on 3rd July 1765. There may have been later ones for a second Thomazine was
buried on 26th August 1770. Possibly she was the youngest.
Like us Bernau found no marriage of Christopher and must have been equally frustrated that
the vicar of St Sidwell’s did not see fit to include the name of the mother when baptising the
children.
The William baptised in 1759 is included in our tree as a direct ancestor. We give his father
as Christopher baptised 1718 in Ashton.
So why do we differ from Bernau?
If Bernau is correct his Christopher(700) would be having his first child at the age of 50 years
and his last baptised child at the age of 64 years. Not impossible but unlikely.
However there is more convincing evidence in the parish register of St Sidwell. It records
the burial on 9th April 1701 of Christopher son of Nicholas. This must be the child born on
12th May 1700.
We feel that the much more likely candidate as the father of William(759) is Christopher(718).
If nothing else his age is more appropriate. He would have been only 32 years when his first
child Christopher was born and a speculative 52 when his last arrived. There are possible
links with pipemakers and with a brother Benjamin as described in Chapter one. It all points
the ancestors being somewhat less prestigious than Bernau claimed.
The only other Christopher Passmore even remotely of a suitable age would be the one
baptised 13th April 1696, son of William Passmore in St Sidwell. He was buried two years
later on 2nd April 1698. He would have been too old anyway.

We have found entries for the baptism of the first eight children listed above.
Those in italics are additionally included in the Bernau Pedigree. We have found no record.
Bernau states that he might have been baptised “Wolf(e)” after one Francis Wolfe of Redruth
in Cornwall whose will was proved in 1807.
One can speculate about the religious fervour of Francis(782) for he married Rebecca Adams
who was the niece of the Divine Dr John Rippon of Tiverton a figure well enough established
in the Baptist church to receive a mention in the Dictionary of National Biography.
Rebecca was the daughter of Samuel Adams and Mary (née Rippon) who had married in
1773 in Tiverton. In the light of the Rippon connection Francis was most likely a strong
Baptist. The couple married, as was required at that time, in the Anglican church of St Mary,
in Brixham. Francis, on his marriage, gave his occupation as "mariner". He was still a
“mariner” on the baptism of his first son in Brixham in 1803. He continued to have his home
in Brixham, a fishing port, until at least 1809 when his first daughter was baptised.
According to the autobiographical notes of his niece Harriet, Francis was at one time with his
brother Christopher in Cornwall in the book business. This is confirmed by the entries in the
parish register of St Mary’s Truro when three of his children were baptised on the same day in
1816. His occupation was noted as “Bookseller”.
His next child John was baptised two years later in the Calvinistic Baptist Church in Truro.
Francis was clearly now a Baptist, but poor, for in 1820 his son Thomas was apprenticed as a
poor child to a “Saddler” in Truro1. A few months later his older son Samuel was also
apprenticed by the parish although no trade was mentioned.
In the 1851 census son Thomas was living with wife & family in Newbridge Street, Truro as a
“Saddler & Harness Maker” and brother Samuel was living with the family.
Bernau says that Francis died at Wilson Street, York Road, Battersea Surrey on 7 th
September 1855, a colour manufacturer and was buried at Battersea cemetery.
ADAMS & RIPPON
Francis Wolfe Passmore married Rebecca Adams in 1801. She was a niece of the Divine Dr
John Rippon. In view of these family connections we collected a small amount of information
about the Rippon & Adams families. This is given below.
