IED 141 Mythology (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is concerned with a study of Greek and Roman mythologies, with emphasis on myths commonly used in English Literature. IED 142 Classical Literature (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, the study of classical Greek and Roman literature is conducted with textual examples focusing on the epic, tragedy, and comedy. IED 143 Introduction to Literature (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of the course is to familiarise students with literary devices and genres such as poetry, drama and prose. IED 146 [Native]Sources of British Literature (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of this course is to give brief information about Celtic culture and mythology, Scandinavian culture and mythology, the Bible and Christianity. IED 151 Introduction to Britain I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is a survey of the geography and the historical, social and literary developments in England from the beginnings to 17th century. IED 152 Introduction to Britain II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course aims at the study of political, social, religious, philosophical and literary developments in Britain from the 17th century to the present. IED 233 Speech and Communication Skills (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, students improve their skills of using voice, body language and other components of public speech through presentations of various public speech types. IED 257 Life and Society in Britain (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course is a survey of society, class, family structure, ethnicity, law enforcement and education system in contemporary Britain. IED 258 British Popular Culture (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is designed to be an introduction to the major debates and theories on the term “culture” and “popular culture” through an analytical discussion of various literary and nonliterary texts. IED 272 British Poetry and Prose I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, British prose and poetry writing from Anglo-Saxon period to late Renaissance is studied with reference to social and literary developments. IED 281 Short Story (3.0.3) ECTS 6 Through a close study of the stories of a number of selected writers, this course aims a study of the most important technical aspects (characterization, plot structure, point of view, style and sensory details) of the short story as a narrative form. IED 282 British Novel I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course intends to enable the students to trace the rise and development of the English novel in the 18th century, and it focuses on the works of Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, and Sterne. IED 337 Translation III (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course focuses on the formation of the skills and terminology that is required in the translation of texts from the fields of social, applied and technological sciences and arts as well as the translation of official documents such as contracts, diplomas and certificates. IED 365 British Drama I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course is a survey of British drama from its beginnings to the 18th century focusing on important works analyzing the plays in their social, political, and historical context. IED 366 Shakespeare (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is concerned with textual analyses and criticism of at least three plays (tragedies, comedies, problem plays, history plays, etc.) by Shakespeare with reference to the literary and social characteristics of the period. IED 368 British Drama II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The state of British drama from the 18th century to 1950s is studied within the context of socio-cultural, political, philosophical and literary developments. IED 373 British Poetry and Prose II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course aims to provide a detailed study of British poetry and prose writings within the literary and social contexts of the 16th and 17th centuries with reference to major literary figures and their works. IED 376 British Poetry and Prose III (3.0.3) ECTS 6 Major samples of poetry and prose from the Augustan and Romantic periods well into the pre-Victorian period are studied within the context of the historical, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds of both periods. IED 387 British Novel II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The students conduct an in-depth study of the English novel in the 19th century with selected texts of major novelists such as Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, William Thackeray and the Bronte sisters. IED 388 British Novel III (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The development of British novel from the early 20th century to 1950s is studied through the appreciation of novels by Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Joseph Conrad, D. H. Lawrence and E. M. Forster’s in the light of the social, political, scientific and philosophical developments of the period. IED 441 Literary Theory and Criticism I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This is a study of the rise and development of literary criticism from classical antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century. Emphasis is put on the theory of literature and major critical ideas with reference to Plato, Aristotle, Horace, medieval and Renaissance critical writings, Matthew Arnold and T.S. Eliot. IED 444 Literary Theory and Criticism II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course major critical movements and theories are studied from the beginning of the 20th Century to the present, with focus on current critical movements. IED 448 Post-colonial English Literature (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with British post-colonial culture and literature through a brief study of the Empire, its dissolution, and post-colonial history and culture as well as the main debates and issues raised in post-colonial studies in relation to the literary works especially of Africa, West Indies, India and Australia. IED 463 British Drama III (3.0.3) ECTS 6 Major developments in British drama from the 1950s to 1980s are studied with reference to specific dramatists and their works. IED 466 British Drama IV (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course is concerned with the study of major developments in British drama from the 1980s to the present with reference to specific dramatists and their works. IED 475 British Poetry and Prose IV (3.0.3) ECTS 6 After an introduction of the social and literary characteristics of the first half of the 20th century, selected works of the War Poets, the Modernist Poets, and samples of prose writing are studied in detail. IED 478 British Poetry and Prose V (3.0.3) ECTS 6 Examples of poetry and prose of the second half of the 20th century and the contemporary period are studied within the context of social, cultural, and literary background of the period. IED 485 British Novel IV (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course aims to a study of the structural and thematical developments in British novel from 1950s to the present. The study of the reflections of postmodernism in selected novels is conducted also with reference to the influences of social, political and philosophical developments on fiction writing. IED 132 Spoken English (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course aims to develop the students' speech skills. For this purpose, pronunciation, dialogue and role playing exercises are undertaken, and various speech types are practiced. IED 135 Advanced English Grammar (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of this course is to enable students to improve their English grammar and to acquire advanced writing and speech skills. IED 138 Reading Skills II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is concerned with the development of reading, comprehension, summarising, and argumentation skills of students as well as with the enrichment of their English vocabulary through the study of articles from newspapers and weekly or monthly magazines. IED 147 Reading Skills I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is concerned with the development of reading, comprehension, summarising and argumentation skills of students as well as with the enrichment of their English vocabulary through the study of various texts. IED 231 Translation I (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is designed to be an introduction to the basic theories, methods and types of translation; practical work in the translations of sentence types from and into Turkish and English, based on a comparative syntactic study of the two languages. IED 248 Translation II (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of the course is to enable the students to practice cultural translation of various texts from to English into Turkish and vice versa. IED 293 Survey of American History and Culture (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course focuses on the study of American history and culture from the colonial to the contemporary period with reference to social, political, philosophical and scientific developments. IED 296 American Drama (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of this course is to study in detail, and within a cultural, social and literary context the plays of important American dramatists who have had an impact upon the development of American drama, from the beginnings to the present. IED 348 Translation IV (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The course focuses on some translation difficulties caused by literary devices and idiomatic expressions in Turkish and English, and enables students to develop problem solving skills through the translations of texts from different literary genres such as short story, novel, drama, and poetry. IED 357 Gender Studies in Literature (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is devised to study the state of women, within a historical and cultural context, in various institutions with special emphasis on media and literature in Britain. IED 381 Types of Non-Fictional Narrative (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course aims to study non-fictional narratives such as biography, memoir, autobiography, letter and travel writing within the context of historical development as well as style, content and form, with special reference to specific British writers from different periods. IED 382 Contemporary English Lyrics (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, the students study lyrics and their relation to literature. Lyricists and groups such as Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and the Pogues are examined. IED 384 Literature and Science-Fiction (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, after a general introduction to science fiction, the students study the works of authors such as Asimov, Bradbury, Moorcock and Aldiss. IED 391 Letters and Diaries (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim this course is to examine the letters and diaries of writers in order to have a better understanding of the historical, political, cultural and literary context of the period. IED 393 Literature in Cinema (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, the students compare and contrast the original works of literature with their movie versions. IED 398 American Poetry (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, the works of important American poets, who have influenced the development of American poetry, from the beginnings to the present, is studied in detail within the social, cultural and literary context. IED 447 Comparative Literature (3.0.3) ECTS 6 This course is designed so as to give a chance to the students to study various literary texts from different cultures and centuries dealing with similar or related genres and/or topics. IED 490 The Postmodern Novel (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, students study postmodern theories within the context of the novel genre and the development of postmodern novel in the US, Canada, and in Britain. The selected works of important postmodern novelists in these countries are comparatively discussed. IED 492 Drama Reviews (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, the students prepare reviews of the plays still acted on stage in terms of their staging, acting, décor, costume, directing, and other aspects. IED 493 Comparative Drama (3.0.3) ECTS 6 In this course, the students study significant plays of the 19th and the 20th centuries based on the technique and the contribution of the playwrights. IED 498 American Novel (3.0.3) ECTS 6 The aim of this course is to study the works of leading American novelists who have influenced the development of the American novel from the beginnings to the present within the cultural, social and literary context.
