MGMT 306 / PSYC 306 Syllabus 1 Industrial & Organizational Psychology MGMT 306 / PSYC 306 Monday & Wednesday 17:00PM-18:15 Spring 2014 I. GENERAL INFORMATION Instructor: Office: Phone: Email: Office Hours: Bing Chun Lin, Ph.D. CAS 201 0212-338-1632 bclin@ku.edu.tr Monday 9:00-11:00 Teaching Assistants: Office Hours: Cemre Sandal csandal@ku.edu.tr Ceyda Ozkuvanci cozkuvanci@ku.edu.tr By appointment Course Description Industrial and Organizational (I-O) Psychology is a discipline of psychology that applies psychological principles, theory, and research to the work setting. This discipline is often divided into two foci: (1) the study of human attributes relevant to work and those methods used to measure these attributes (i.e., Industrial Psychology), and (2) the study of human reactions to the work context (i.e., Organizational Psychology). Both foci seek to predict, maintain, and increase work performance and satisfaction. This course will provide students an overview of both Industrial and Organizational Psychology topics, placing a heavy emphasis on understanding the work topics, and applying each topic to the modern workplace. Course Objectives 1. Review the discipline of I-O Psychology, including main topics, scholars, and theories in the field. 2. Gain introductory understanding of the research methods used to study humans in organizational settings. 3. Learn how findings from I-O Psychology can be applied as solutions to organizational problems. Required Text Landy, F., & Conte, J. (2010). Work in the 21st Century: An Introduction to Industrial and Organizational Psychology. (3rd ed.) Supplemental Text Bowe, J., Bowe, M., & Streeter, S. (Eds.). (2000). Gig: Americans talk about their jobs. New York, NY: Three Rivers Press. II. CLASS POLICIES Instructor’s Expectations 1. Availability of Lecture Material I will teach primarily using Microsoft PowerPoint, and students can expect me to distribute these prior to class. However, to promote attendance, I will omit significant portions of information from these “skeleton slides,” and I expect you to take notes in class to complete these slides. 2. Attend Class Although attendance is not required in this course, it is strongly encouraged. Information used to create the exams will be derived from the lectures and activities assigned during class. It is strongly MGMT 306 / PSYC 306 Syllabus 2 recommended that you find study partner(s) early in the quarter so in the event you must miss class, you will have the information that you missed. 3. Read the Text While lectures will not be derived solely from the textbook, the textbook provides students with a basis for understanding the lecture and participating in class activities. Because exams are largely built based on materials discussed in class, neglecting to read the textbook will adversely influence your grade, and potentially the grades of your colleagues because of your non-contribution to class discussion. 4. Be Professional Cellular phones must either be turned off, or on silent mode Be punctual in your attendance and when you turn in your assignments Be punctual to scheduled meetings with me Be courteous to me and to your fellow students If you email me, please use full sentences, and appropriate grammar Students’ Expectations 1. Reasonable Accommodations Students can expect that I will remain professional and accommodating, so long as accommodations sought are within the parameters of this syllabus. This means I can meet with you to discuss course content that is unclear – I will not meet with you to re-teach material discussed in class. 2. Study Guides I will provide short study guides after each topic area we cover in class. These will only be given to students who attend the particular class. If you do not attend class or leave prior to my distribution of the study guide, I will not provide you a copy of the guide. This is to promote attendance and participation in class and reduce procrastination. Students who attend class deserve an advantage on exams. However, please note that I will NOT provide a comprehensive study guide before each exam. 3. Make-Ups If you need to make up an exam, you must email me in advance with the reason for your inability to take the exam on the scheduled date. Eligibility for make-ups will be determined on a case-by-case basis, and make-up exams must be taken within a week before or after the scheduled date. Quizzes and group projects cannot be made-up for any reason. 4. Instructor Availability I am committed to facilitating your learning of course material. However, instructing this course is not my sole professional responsibility. Nonetheless, you can generally expect me to take less than 24 hours to respond to your email (depending on content). If you schedule a meeting with me outside of office hours, and are not present within 10 minutes of the scheduled time, you will need to re-schedule the appointment with me. III. GRADING Your grade will consist of the following: exams (50%), pop quizzes (20%) and a group project (30%). 1. Exams MGMT 306 / PSYC 306 Syllabus 3 You will take three exams throughout the semester: two mid-term exams and one final. Exams will consist solely of multiple choice questions (50 questions each). Because each exam is worth a substantial portion of your grade, it is highly recommended that you study frequently (e.g. 30 minutes before each class). Exam content will cover both class and reading material, thus it is imperative that you attend class and commit to reading the textbook. 2. Pop Quizzes You will take three (unannounced) pop quizzes throughout the quarter. Your lowest pop quiz grade will be dropped. Because the quizzes will be unannounced, they will be easier (relative to the exams), and will only cover lecture material. It is recommended that you use your performance on the quiz as a barometer for your comprehension of the lecture material. If you fail to take the quiz, you will receive a 0, and will not have an opportunity to make-up the quiz grade. 3. Group Project This project will require you to apply your knowledge of I-O Psychology to a real organization. I have randomly assigned each member of the class to a team (rosters can be found in section V). Your group will pick one narrative from Bowe et al’s Gig (2000), discuss the problems with the organization, and propose specific strategies to solve these problems using I-O Psychology topics in the form of both a paper (20%) and a 15-minute presentation (10%). Groups must select their narrative and notify the TAs by 24-Feb. Papers must be typed using APA format, stapled, and physically turned in to the professor by 7-May at 17:00. Electronic submissions of the assignments, late assignments, and unstapled assignments will NOT be accepted. Additionally, presentations are scheduled from 28-April to 7-May, and presentations should not exceed 15 minutes. While each group will receive a certain number of points for their project, each individual will receive their own unique group project grade. This unique group project grade will be based on group members’ perceptions of each student’s contributions to the final project as rated on the Group Member Evaluation Form. This is designed to reduce social loafing and increase equity amongst group members. The Group Member Evaluation Form is due on 7-May, and should be turned in with the group project paper. Mid-Term Exam 1= 15% Mid-Term Exam 2 = 15% Final Exam = 20% Group Project = 30% Quiz 1 = 10% Quiz 2 = 10% IV. ACADEMIC HONESTY Honesty and trust are important to all of us as individuals. Students and faculty adhere to the following principles of academic honesty at Koc University. 1. Individual accountability for all individual work, written or oral. Copying from others or providing answers or information, written or oral, to others is cheating. 2. Proper acknowledgment of original author. Copying from another student's paper or from another text without written acknowledgment is plagiarism. MGMT 306 / PSYC 306 Syllabus 4 3. Collaborate in teams only when authorized. Unauthorized help from another person or having someone else write one's paper or assignment is collusion. Cheating, plagiarism, and collusion are serious offenses resulting in an F grade and disciplinary action. Honesty and trust are important values to Koc University students and faculty. I enforce Koc University regulations concerning academic integrity to its fullest extent. Cheating, plagiarism, and collusion are NOT to be tolerated. I would also like to attract your attention to the following unacceptable behavior: extensive quoting (exceeding max. of one page) even if you cite the reference, submitting the same or similar paper or project as you prepare(d) for another course this semester or in previous years, submitting the same or similar paper or project that was prepared by someone else in previous years. If academic honesty of a group member is questioned, all group members will be affected by the incident to the same extent. Therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure that members in your team adhere to the above rules. V.
