TSUNAMI Telegram (dated March 2006) A general overview of India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand Emergency Programmes Immediate help: (Handout of cash support/saving books, emergency goods, first aid supplies, clothes, dry food, sports goods, school material) SOS Children's Villages helped 23,000 people (4,500 families); 850 children were unaccompanied Day care centres: (Establishment and running of trauma, protection and activity centres for children) In 11 day care centres SOS Children's Villages has taken and is taking care for 1,800 children. Fishing boats: (Purchase and equipment of fishing boats for fishing communities) SOS Children's Villages has handed over a total of 343 fishing boats for 1,120 families. Rebuilding Lives Programme Transitional Homes (Provisory shelters for beneficiaries of private permanent houses) SOS Children's Villages provided 274 families (approx. 1,370 people) with temporary shelters. Private Permanent Houses (Construction of decent private houses till mid 2006) At 15 locations SOS Children's Villages is constructing and reconstructing 2,260 private houses for 11,200 people. Multipurpose Community Centres: (Set-up of multi purpose buildings which will serve as kindergarten, provide medical services, adult training, family strengthening programmes, tsunami shelter for the community) SOS Children's Villages is planning to build 15 community centres by end of 2006 and to hand them over to the local community within two to four years. SOS Facilities SOS Children's Villages (Including kindergartens, youth facilities, vocational training centres) SOS Children's Villages is going to establish 7 SOS Children Villages (2 in India, 1 in Sri Lanka, 3 in Indonesia, 1 in Thailand) by end of 2007 where up to 1,000 children will find a new home. At the moment there are 43 children in the care of SOS Children's Villages in a temporary facility in Pondicherry/India. SOS Social Centres (For family strengthening, adult training, day care and medical care for children) SOS Children's Villages is planning to build and run 6 SOS Social Centres by end of 2006 (2 in Sri Lanka, 4 in Indonesia).
