When we want to report someone’s words, we look at the verb in the sentence, and we go one tense back:
Present Simple
“I play tennis”, she said
Present Continuous
“I am playing tennis”, she said
Past Simple
“I played tennis”, she said
Past Continuous
“I was playing tennis”, she said
Present Perfect
“I have played tennis”, she said
Present Perfect Continuous
“I have been playing tennis”, she said
