Bill Brown started making furniture in Spain in 1992 when he was working for André
Forrer a Dutch sculptor. Through André he learnt the importance of natural symmetry
and simplicity in all of his work.
His desire initially was to make simple folding furniture from wood and beautiful
Indian fabrics. Since 1997, when he started to sell his designs in the UK, the range
has included a folding Table / Stool, Roll-up Beds, Hammock, Rocking Director’s
Chair, Picnic / Child’s Chair and a Pyramid Tent.
Always searching for other products to make it was by sheer chance that Bill began
to make bags. Having a basket full of fabric ends, he made some bags for fun as
Christmas presents for his friends and family. They were a great success and Bill
decided to try his luck at selling them at local fairs and markets.
Being simple, functional and modestly priced, the bags were extremely popular.
Sales quickly grew to a level which Bill could not keep up with and he employed two
home workers to make the bags. Demand for the bags continued to exceed
production and as a result they are now hand made in Kerala (South West India) at
the same location where the fabric itself is woven and the cotton is grown.
The range of bags continues to grow and has reached almost 100 fabric/style
combinations. It’s not just bags! There are hats as well and several new products
including a range of kitchen aprons and the extremely popular roll-up beds which are
available in various sizes and guises.
The business has grown with the demand, now employing five dedicated and
enthusiastic staff. Selling mainly through independent shops and boutiques but also
directly to the public through their website, Bill Brown products can be found
throughout Europe and in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada.
Bill has not forgotten his roots and insists that the production of his bags is both
environmentally and labour friendly. This has been made all the more easy for him by
the excellent, ethical approach towards business of the owner of his Indian factory.
Having outgrown Bill’s small Sussex cottage the company recently moved to larger
premises in the South Downs near Brighton. With bright new colours and exciting
designs in the new 2008 range, and with new customers keen to buy our products,
