JOINT MEETING WITH ENGINEERING SOCIETY OF YORK AT
THE KINSLEY CONSTRUCTION EDUCATION CENTER
Come join us the PSPE Lincoln Chapter and the Engineering Society of York to explore
engineering applications of Geophysics … from the practical to the unusual.
Konrad Crist, a professional geologist who has provided consulting services across the
United States, will present an overview of geophysics. Geophysics is a collection of
techniques used by engineers to find objects or materials that are buried underground or
obstructed by concrete.
The various geophysical methods use seismic waves,
electromagnetics, electrical resistivity, radar, and changes in gravity to sense to depths
ranging from a few inches to several miles.
Mr. Crist will discuss the common geophysical techniques that are applicable to civil,
structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineers, such as locating underground
tanks/utilities, buried foundations, water supply sources, debris, archeological resources,
and sinkholes; identifying rebar/conduit in structures and assessing the quality of
concrete; and evaluating depth to rock and the presence of water and unstable soils. He
will also provide an brief overview of some of the applications for dams, mining,
landfills, oil and gas prospecting, and marine exploration. Lastly, Mr. Crist will present
some of the more unusual uses, such as identifying buried munitions, locating graves, and
even searching for buried treasure.

From York:
Follow East Princess Street to South Harrison Street. Turn right on S. Harrison Street and the
next right that will direct you into the education center parking lot.
From East:
Follow Route 30 west to a left on North Hills Road. South on North Hills Road to right on East
Market Street. Follow Market Street to a left onto South Harrison Street. Follow S. Harrison
Street to the first right after crossing Princess Street into the education center parking lot.

Take I-83 to the Market Street exit. Turn west on Market Street and follow directions above.
