• THE PATH OF FOUR CASTLES
Preddvor, the court of peaceful nature, lies between four castles. By the lake there is the already mentioned
grad Hrib (Castle Hrib), and in its vicinity above the castle in the distance overshadowing the village of Potoče
stands grad Turn (Castle Turn) once home of our poet and composer Josipina Urbančič Turnograjska. Today it
is a home for the elderly from the local area and further afield. From Josipinina senčnica (Josipina's
summerhouse) we take a walk on the path to the hill Sveti Jakob (St. Jacob), to the left from the summerhouse
we can find the ruins of Pusti grad (Castle Pusti). It is the oldest among the castles in Preddvor as it was first
mentioned at the beginning of the 12th century and some date it even further back in history. We can find
ruins by the path to St. Jacob, which is a popular trip destination. In the middle of the town centre is grad Dvor
(Castle Dvor), right beside the parish church Cerkev svetega Petra (St. Peter’s Church). The castle was built in
Renaissance and Baroque styles and was first mentioned in written records in 1147.
• THE MAGIC CHURCHES
Succursal churches in the nearby villages are very interesting and literally call out to be visited. Cerkev svetega
Jakoba (St. Jacob’s Church) which stands on a ridge with a great view and is a much liked hiking destination
has a Romanesque nave and a Baroque presbytery from the 17th century. In the village of Breg we can find
Cerkev svetega Lenarta (St. Leonard’s Church), which has the most well preserved medieval interior in the
Gorenjska region as well as in Slovenia. Above the village of Mače is Cerkev svetega Nikolaja (St. Nicholai ‘s
Church); frescos in its interior are one of the most important monuments in modern day Slovenia, with a
distinctive soft style in Gothic wall painting. In the village of Tupaliče is Cerkev svetega Klemena (St. Clement’s
Church) with its major attraction being the wonderful golden altar from the late 17th or early 18th century.
Above the village of Bašelj is Cerkev svetega Lovrenca (St. Laurence’s Church), whose western nave wall is
decorated by frescos with images of Journey of the Three Kings, which are works of art of Friulian masters from
the early 15th century. Cerkev svetega Egidija (St. Giles’ Church) has a Romanesque nave with a hint of
Baroque style and a ribbed arched presbytery from 1520 and a Baroque church tower. We can see the sight in
the village of Bela. On Možjanca, on a beautiful top hill with a panoramic view stands Cerkev svetega Miklavža
(St. Nicholas’ Church) from where one can view the valley of the river Kokra. Cerkev Marije Brezmadežne
(Church of the Virgin Mary) in Kokra with its altars invites numerous pilgrims who ask Mary to help them. On
the outside, the pilgrimage church is very much reminiscent of various similar village baroque churches around
Slovenia. The church was consecrated in 1802.
• THE FIRING RANGE AND CLIMBING CRAG
A stone’s throw from Lake Črnava the road takes us to a place called Draga. On the right side is the firing
range, on the left side you can practice your climbing skills.
• CULINARY OFFERINGS
Preddvor also lures with its excellent cuisine.
Posmodulja flat cake
In the past, it was a holiday for farmers when housewives kneaded dough and baked bread in a wooden stove. This was
present all over Slovenia. In the villages around Preddvor, while waiting for the bread to be baked, people used to make
round flat cakes, spread them with minced lard or strewed them with cracklings or put some sour cream on them and
strewed them with minced chives. They baked it quickly in the stove (they singed it - in Slovene posmoditi - thefore its
name “posmodulja”), and ate it when it was still hot.
• ACCOMMODATION
There are numerous possibilities for accommodation – you can choose from hotels, boarding houses,
apartments and tourist farms.
We are sure that you will leave us full of unforgettable memories, and everyone who knows how to admire
nature will definitely return to Preddvor – the court of peaceful nature.
