University of Utah Thoracic Surgery Residency Program Policies and Procedures RESIDENT SELECTION POLICY / PROCESS Candidates for this program are selected based on their preparedness, ability, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. I. PURPOSE: To outline eligibility and selection criteria for University of Utah Thoracic Surgery Residency Program. This policy complies with the GME 1.1 RESIDENT SELECTION POLICY / PROCESS and the ACGME Program Requirements for Residency Education in Thoracic Surgery II. POLICY: To be eligible for appointment to the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Utah School of Medicine, an applicant must: Be eligible for graduate medical education programs accredited by the ACGME stipulated in the Institutional Requirements and departmental policies and procedures of the University of Utah School of Medicine. have documented near completion of a general surgery residency program accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible to sit for the examination given by the American Board of Surgery by the time they begin their thoracic surgical training. III. PROCEDURE: This Thoracic Surgical Residency Program utilizes ERAS for all applicants and participates in the NRMP match for final resident selection. ERAS®—The Electronic Residency Application Service—is a service that transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, MSPEs, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical schools to fellowship, osteopathic internship, and residency programs using the Internet. The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private, not-for-profit corporation established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education (GME) in the United States. Process: Applications are reviewed in ERAS via criteria set forth by the ACGME Program Requirements, the Resident Recruitment Committee and this institution. The program director reviews applicants who meet the criteria and qualified applicants are invited to interview. Representative faculty from each participating institution, current thoracic surgery residents and the program director interview candidates. The ranking of applicants is done by the interviewing surgical faculty. A match list is developed and submitted to the NRMP. Strict conformance with the rules of the match is maintained throughout the selection process.
