 Award Winners.
 Basil and Joann Boritzki Scholarship: Maria Christodoulou (MAT) and Jerry Gusta (EAD, Elementary)

 Departmental Highlights
 Communication.
 Shaley Moore and Rebecca Saunders presented at the Association for Conflict Resolution Annual
Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio (Oct. 8-11) - - "From Both Sides Now: The Circle Experience of Girls and
Facilitators and What It Means for Practice."
 Shelbie Mills and Rebecca Saunders participated at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Organization of
Communication, Language, & Gender in Millbrae, CA (Oct 16-19). Shelbie presented on “Gender and
Instructor Attire” for a conference session focusing on the topic Gendered Work in the Academy. Rebecca
took part in a conference session Family: Centering, Mentoring, and Meaning where Rebecca presented on,
“Family Group Conference Experiences from the Facilitator’s Perspective.”
 Christen Moore presented at the “Exploring Orwell’s Guilt” at the Graduate Student Conference Doing
Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN
 Important Faculty related funding deadlines. Guidelines and applications can be found at

 Faculty Research Grants: 20 proposals were received and are being reviewed by the committee. Spring proposal
deadline is Friday, February 6, 2015.
 Summer Faculty Fellowships: 14 proposals were received and are being reviewed by the committee.
 Important Student related funding deadlines.
 MAGS Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award. 2 nominations were received and are being reviewed by the
committee.
 Thesis Funding: SP15 – February 23, 2015. Information can be found at
http://graduate.missouristate.edu/currentstudents/Funding.htm.
 Need-Based Scholarship for Graduate Students. A new need-based scholarship has been developed to
encourage graduating seniors who are Pell eligible to consider pursuing a graduate degree. The scholarship is for
$1,000 a semester and can be used for three consecutive semesters for a total of $3,000. Information is available
at http://www.missouristate.edu/FinancialAid/scholarships/Graduate.htm.
 Graduate Student Study Breaks. Study breaks are scheduled on most Mondays from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in PSU 400.
Refreshments will be available!!! Please advertise this to all of you graduate students as a place to grab a bite to eat
and have some quiet study time. Information available at

 Graduation Deadlines
 DUE NOW - - Students will now apply directly into the University Graduation system which will allow them to
choose how they get their diploma - - mailed, self pick-up or authorized pick-up of someone else. Students find
this application in their My Missouri State in the Academics Tab.
 November 24, 2014 - - Deadline for submission of a Thesis to the Graduate College.
 November 24, 2014 - - Deadline for submission of Seminar Report Form to Grad College (if required).
 December 4, 2014 - - Deadline for submission of Comprehensive Exam Result Form to the Graduate College.
 December 12, 2014 - - Commencement (12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.).

 Graduate Student Workshops.
 How to Get Into Grad School. February 12, 3:30 -5:00 pm, PSU 314C. Speakers: tba. This session will discuss the types
of graduate programs, degrees, and certificates available to students, as well as some do's and don'ts for applying to
graduate school.
 Writing an Abstract. March 26, 4:00 -5:00 pm, PSU 314C. Speakers: Tom Tomasi, Graduate College. This session will
include suggestions on how to write an abstract. The session is intended to assist students as they prepare abstracts for their
theses and for the Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum, which will be held May 3, 2014, but this session is also open to any
graduate student.
 Giving a Presentation. April 22, 3:30 -5:00 pm, PSU 314A. Speakers: Tom Tomasi, Graduate College. This session will
include suggestions and examples of successful presentation techniques for both oral and poster presentations. This session
is intended to assist students as they prepare for the Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum, which will be held on April 25, 2015,
but this session is also open to any graduate student.
