Strategic Planning: The Omicron chapter began the 2014-2015 academic year aiming to increase our presence within the University of Maryland community. We planned to achieve this goal by placing renewed emphasis on our scholastic outreach initiatives, aligning our efforts with our national mission. Another key priority for our chapter was increasing membership engagement through event participation. In addition to these objectives, our chapter would continue to promote scholastic distinction by publicly recognizing academically excellent students. This past academic year has proved as rewarding as it was challenging, and Omicron is proud to have accomplished all of the above goals and more. Activities: New Student Welcome Day (on-going) (6/14/14): New Student Welcome Day is the first orientation event for incoming students of the University Of Maryland School Of Pharmacy. The Omicron chapter displayed a trifold introducing members to the organization. Information was provided regarding the mission and vision, requirements for new members, and various activities the organization is involved in within the school. Honor Code Presentation (on-going) (8/19/14): The Honor Code of the University Of Maryland School Of Pharmacy was originally drafted by the Omicron chapter in the 1990’s. The Chapter President along with the SGA President presented the Honor Code to the incoming students during their Orientation week. New Student Organizational Gala (on-going) (08/19/14): During Orientation week, the University Of Maryland School Of Pharmacy sponsored an Organizational Gala to showcase the various campus organizations. The Omicron chapter displayed a trifold introducing members to the organization. Information was provided regarding the mission and vision, requirements for new members, and various activities the organization is involved in within the school. Student of the Month (on-going) (2014-2015 academic year) The Omicron chapter partnered with Phi Lambda Sigma to sponsor the Student of the Month. Each month, an outstanding student in leadership, academic achievement, and graduate affairs was nominated and then voted on by their peers. These students were then honored over email school wide and received a faculty-sponsored award. 4.0 Book Awards (on-going) (4/17/15) The Omicron chapter recognized P2 pharmacy students who achieved a 4.0 GPA during their first year at the University Of Maryland School Of Pharmacy at our Induction Banquet. They were given certificates of recognition and the Sandford Antibiotic Guide to aid them in their rotations Revised 9-12-14 The Rho Chi Society Annual Chapter Report Pharmacotherapy Review Session (on-going) (8/28/14): The Omicron chapter invited P4 Rho Chi members to discuss with current P3 students tips and ways to succeed in the Pharmacotherapy courses. Rho Chi Exam Review sessions (on-going) (9/16/14, 10/09/14, 10/18/14, 12/9/14): The Omicron chapter held synchronous review sessions for P1 and P2 students in Principles of Drug Action, Medicinal Chemistry II, and Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics I. Rho Chi members made comprehensive study guides for each review session that was then distributed through the listserv. This was an open forum for Rho Chi members to review important concepts and allow students to ask questions for clarification. 5 Rho Chi members provided 18 hours of review sessions. Brick Toast and Coffee Fundraiser (new initiative) (10/1/14): The Omicron chapter collaborated with APhA-ASP’s Operation Heart to start this new fundraiser. All proceeds went to help raise money for the Greater Baltimore Heart Walk University of Maryland Pharmacy team, the The Artery of Walking. Healthy Halloween (on-going) (10/24/14): Rho Chi participated in APhA-ASP’s Operation Diabetes’ Healthy Halloween event. 4 Rho Chi members were present at this 2-hour event where they gave out temporary Halloweenthemed tattoos and discussed safe sugar intake with elementary school children. Research Roundtable (on-going) (11/18/14): The Omicron chapter collaborated with the Student Government Association and APhA-ASP to discuss the variety of research options available to pharmacy students. The event started with an open forum where the 3 department heads discussed their department’s research activities. Students were reminded of the important counseling and administration points before they were allowed the opportunity to practice their techniques using either fat pads or students’ arms. MPJE Law Review (on-going) 2015 spring semester: A law review session for 4th year pharmacy students at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and out-of-state pharmacists and students in preparation for the MPJE. This year, Rho Chi members aided in increasing law knowledge by running exam debriefing sessions for the Pharmacy Law course, running Law Jeopardy, advertising and marketing for the Law Review, and tabling for the 2-day law review Financial/ Budgeting: Due to changes in our financial structure the overarching financial goal for Omicron during the 2014-2015 academic year was cost savings. Specifically, we aimed to reduce costs as compared to previous years without sacrificing the quality of important events such as our induction dinner. To achieve this end we removed wasteful spending associated with several events, aggressively sought sponsorship from a number of pharmacy organizations, identified new funding sources within the school, and continued to improve upon our preexisting fundraising efforts. We were able to hold all regularly scheduled events successfully without raising dues. We finished the year gaining a small amount of money but more importantly, the financial structure of our organization has been carefully preserved for the incoming new executive board. The incoming President and Treasurer have been counseled at length regarding cost saving measures and reasonable spending for Omicron’s new funding structure. The attached budget was decided on accounting for gains (funds from T Shirt Sales, funds from Law Review, sponsorships) and expenditures. Expenditures were assigned by creating a chronological list of events to be held during the academic year and assigning estimated costs based on data from previous years. The treasurer works with the executive board members and Chapter Advisor to provide free admission for inductees at the induction banquet and the lowest cost possible for guests and current Rho Chi members. Initiation Function: This year’s initiation function took place at the SMC Campus Center, which houses several ballroom’s for school events. The event took place on 4/17/15, and was attended by over one hundred guests including our new inductees, the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, 16 faculty members and many more friends and family. This year’s speaker was Dr. Brent Reed. Dr. Reed, a specialist in cardiology pharmacy, joined the SOP the previous year. As a member of Rho Chi during his time in pharmacy school at UNC, Dr. Reed shared invaluable perspective with the new inductees. The initiation function was quite successful this year, particularly in a trying financial time for Omicron. We look forward to another successful event this coming year. Revised 9-12-14 The Rho Chi Society Annual Chapter Report Evaluation/Reflection: Reflecting on this year, it was truly a learning experience for me as a leader. We planned a large number of events that went very well, and a number that could be improved upon. Without question our greatest successes this year were maintaining financial stability and providing excellent test review sessions. My primary goal as president was to further our national mission by creating academic leaders. My tool to achieve this end was our test reviews. Unfortunately, in years past the reviews suffered from a lack of planning and interest on the part of our members. I took the initiative to revamp how reviews were delivered and advertised, and I lectured in several of them myself. We put on 9 reviews this year, each of which was attended by over 80 students. We received outstanding feedback and I hope that we will be able to continue this same success moving forward. Omicron suffered a great loss to our fundraising ability within recent years, and one of the president’s primary responsibilities in the past 2 years has been revamping many of our events to fit our new financial situation. This year we did this by seeking out non traditional funding sources including the SGA as well as several new community partnerships. We finished the year making a little over 1000$ when all transactions were accounted for. That money can be put toward Induction Ceremony next year. Currently Omicron is quite strong in fostering academic excellence and providing community service activities. Our chapter could certainly increase our patient care outreach activities.
