Content for tours page: Historic Fort Wayne is operated by the Detroit Recreation Department. The Fort is open for visitors every Saturday and Sunday from May 27 through September 3. The Fort is open 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Sunday. Secured, onsite parking is available for $5.00. There is no charge for self-guided tours. Visitors are provided with a brochure upon entering the park which has the self-guided tour map. Guided tours are available both days at 12 p.m and 2 p.m. Tours typically last between 1 and 1 ½ hours and cost $3.00 per person. The National Museum of the Tuskegee Airmen is housed at Historic Fort Wayne. Their hours are often by appointment. For your safety, the Detroit Recreation Department has the following information for visitors: At least one adult should accompany children on the Fort grounds. NO pets; Service animals are welcome. All visitors must wear shirts and shoes. DO NOT ENTER or approach any building unless accompanied by a museum guide. NO metal detectors, digging and taking of artifacts. Picnicking is allowed, but NO barbecues, fires, or alcoholic beverages. Please place trash and litter in proper receptacles. NO fishing or swimming is permitted. The shoreline is a hazardous area, please stay 15 ft. from the river’s edge. Do not climb on anything or enter any fenced off areas. Visitors are asked to report any vandalism observed to Fort Staff. Follow the service drive to the 2nd stoplight. This is Livernois. Turn left on Livernois. Follow Livernois until it ends at Jefferson. Cross Jefferson and enter Historic Fort Wayne. From the South: Take I-75 North to exit 46, the Livernois exit. At the top of the exit ramp, turn right on Livernois. Follow Livernois until it ends at Jefferson. Content for the Civil War Days page: Detroit MI – On July 8th and 9th the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition in partnership with the Detroit Recreation Department, will host Civil War Days. The public will be treated to live Civil War battles. The sounds of bugles and the thunder of cannon and musket fire will echo around the Fort. Vintage Baseball Association members will compete mid-day Saturday and Sunday. The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition has been working to make this experience a memorable one. On-going Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery drill demonstrations will be held all weekend; as well as, live performances by The 5th Michigan Regimental Band. Visitors will be permitted to hold actual civil war gear and equipment, while learning about the history of the men and Fort. Vintage Baseball Association members will compete mid-day Saturday and Sunday. Coalition Chair, Tom Berlucchi had this to say about the weekend activities, “This year is going to be our best event yet. Our goal is to give people a better understanding of what life was like in Michigan during the Civil War, through live entertainment.” The 1848 era barracks, within the walls of Historic Fort Wayne, recently underwent over $2,000,000 in restorations from a Wayne County Parks mileage. This renovated garrison will house Union re-enactors, where many Michigan men mustered and trained during the Civil War. Confederate troops will camp outside the old Star Fort. All camps are open to the public to visit. Interesting Fort Facts: The Fort first opened in 1845. This is one of few remaining sites that soldiers from the Civil War trained in Michigan. The Fort was used by the US armed forces through the Vietnam War. The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition has been active in preservation and restoration since 2004. Extending weekend hours will be from 9 am - 5 pm both Saturday and Sunday. Guided Tours, available throughout the day, are $3.00/person. Secured parking is available for an additional fee.
