Objectives to gain an understanding of design of underground structures to learn the fundemental concepts of tunnelling related subjects to learn the basic operations in tunnelling, such as excavation and support technics to overcome the challenges of difficult natural mediums to apply different improvement techniques prior to excavation
Syllabus Introduction to tunnelling:
Geological aspects of tunnelling:
The Geological Environment:
Tunnelling methods: Soft ground conditions,
Tunnelling methods: rock conditions using drill and blast
Tunnelling methods: rock conditions using roadheader machine excavation
Adverse ground conditions: effect on tunnelling
Ground treatment in tunnelling
Design and support of tunnels: operational criteria and principal support types
Support of tunnels: rock reinforcement
Support of tunnels: concrete and shotcrete linings
Support of tunnels: new austrian tunnelling method
Stresses and displacements associated with excavation of tunnels
Design of tunnels: soft ground
Design of tunnels: rock conditions
Intended Learning Outcomes
To gain an appreciation of the use of rock mass classification applied to rock engineering design.
