The Sunny Valley lodge is situated in the sun-bathed Valle dell’Alpe,
under the magnificent peaks of Mount Sobretta, at no less than 2,775 metres
above sea level, in the centre of the Ortles-Cevedale and Adamello
mountain chain with their stupendous glacial blanket.
The valley runs perfectly parallel to the East-West solar cycle and offers
the best position for admiring the fantastic ridges of the Pizzo Tresero
(3,594 m) and the Corno dei Tre Signori (3,360).
A UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF MOUNTAIN ARCHITECTURE
The Sunny Valley lodge is built entirely out of local stone and a wood,
called kelo, which comes from Lapland. The building’s architectural
qualities make it a unique example in the whole of the Alps, not only in
Italy.
During construction, a group of specialist workmen from Finland
laboured alongside skilled local builders. The Finnish workers were true
artists in woodwork and were able to make the plans take shape aided only
by a compass and a simple chainsaw.
WHY USE KELO?
Kelo is a very warm and tough type of wood, perfect for the temperatures
that drop to even minus fifty degrees in Lapland. Dried standing in the
forest, it is only cut after its life cycle, which lasts approximately two
hundred years, is over: this means that no tree has been killed by human
beings to satisfy the demands of the tourist industry!
Kelo grows in a region situated within the Arctic polar circle, 300 km
East of Rovaniemi, the administrative capital of Lapland, which is the
Northernmost province of Finland. As a consequence of the tree’s long life
cycle, the wood has an oxidized surface approximately two centimetres
thick and an unaltered inner part that is very warm.
A natural shrinkage occurs over time and special joints have been used
for this reason. A natural fibre composed of stone and wood, which
breathes and does not deteriorate over the years, has been used to seal the
joints. This is a spectacular building, made by authentic masters of
traditional craftsmanship.
A NATURAL HABITAT
Surrounded by the Stelvio National Park, warm in the splendid bar with a
chalice of excellent Valtellina wine in front of you, or lying in the sun on
one of the chaises longues on the heated terrace with its panoramic views,
you can admire the enchanting mountain scenery with its typical Alpine
flora and the fauna which help make this area famous throughout Europe:
chamois, deer, roe deer and especially the mythical bearded vulture, a
fascinating bird of prey with a wingspan of more than 3 metres which can
reach a speed of 130 km per hour.
HOW TO GET THERE
■ Throughout the whole day, from 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., the Sunny Valley
lodge is easily reached via an 8-seater cablecar with an automatic hook-up,
which leaves the entrance of Santa Canterina Valfurva at 1,730 metres (it
can carry 2,800 people per hour). The arrival station is only 50 metres from
the lodge.
■ There is a shuttle service to the lodge in the evenings, using snow cats
equipped with a cabin seating 30 people.
