YEAR 5 NEWS Our latest news… One week to half term! A big thank you to everyone for attending our recent parents’ evening, it was great to meet you all and thank you for your continued support. As we now fast approach the half term break, here is the very latest news from Year 5. Wandsworth Cineworld Trip Just to remind you that on Friday 23rd October 2009, Year 5/6 will be attending a screening of the feature film ‘Golden Compass’ at Wandsworth Cineworld. The film (PG) also forms part of our literacy studies and we are delighted to have obtained free tickets for the event. This is a special educational screening (provided by Film Education) and therefore takes place during school time. Please note, your child will not require any money for this trip. They can bring a bottle of water, plain biscuit and fruit if they wish. However, they will be returning to school before lunch. Spelling time Year 5 began their spelling programme this week. By way of an introduction we have provided a document (overleaf) containing the Year 4 medium frequency words and also the medium frequency words for Year 5 term 1 and 2. Many of these words do not follow a regular pattern and others are easily confused. Feel free to use the ‘look, say, cover, write and check’ technique to practise these words with your child. A further great resource to support your child’s spelling appears at the following address: www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/lookcover/lookcover.html However, please do bear in mind there is no need to panic as we will also be covering these words within our own spelling programme. In addition, your child will bring home a card containing ten words most weeks, this will include seven words based on a spelling pattern investigated at school, and three words spelt incorrectly by your child during the week. The children will practice these words at school each day. They will also be provided with an optional spelling investigation sheet entitled ‘Turn the Light On.’ This sheet is to be completed at home and is an optional activity. P.E.- When we return to school after half term, unfortunately we will only have two remaining swimming sessions, the first taking place on Wednesday 4th November and the last session on Wednesday 11th November. After this date 2E will continue to have P.E. on a Tuesday, we will also have a session on Thursday. Suitable footwear (trainers) for both days is ideal. Welcome - A warm welcome to Miss Hurst and Mr Bramwell, who will be working alongside me over the course of the next half term as part of their PGCE teaching training programme. More to come - With Key Stage 2 play looming and a trip to the Victoria & Albert museum yet to come, it looks like the second half of autumn term will be just as hectic! Take care now, Mr Hoyle P.S.
