Job purpose
This is an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Physiotherapist to work within the Lower
Limbs Team of the Rehabilitation Division at DMRC Headley Court, assisting with the delivery
of the Military Hip Rehabilitation Outcome (MILO) study. Based at the Defence Medical
Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, the study is a collaboration between the University of
Bath, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Arthritis Research UK’s National Centre for Sport,
Exercise and Osteoarthritis (CSEO). We are seeking an Advanced Physiotherapist who will be
responsible for the expert assessment, diagnosis and planning of care of personnel referred
from across the military, identifying those eligible for the MILO study.
Working closely with a Consultant Lead and the Officer Commanding, you will be responsible
for data collection, participant consent procedures, service development projects, as well as
supervision of Band 6 and junior Military Physiotherapists. You will also be expected to liaise
effectively with senior clinicians in both Primary and secondary care environments.
You will be required to demonstrate the highest levels of clinical skills and expertise specific to
this field. You will have considerable experience working in a musculoskeletal and
rehabilitation environment. You will require excellent communication skills and be able to
manage and prioritise your own workload. The successful candidate will also be required to
undertake any additional duties appropriate to the post delegated by your line manager.
Previous experience working and supervising staff in a military rehabilitation and/or sports
medicine environment, and use of the DMICP system is desirable but not essential. Evidence
of immunity to Hepatitis B is required. This job is a fixed-term contract covering the period of
data collection for the MILO study.

Overall direction will be provided by the Principal Investigator (James Bilzon, University of
Bath), with line management responsibility provided by the Officer Commanding Lower Limb
Rehabilitation, DMRC Headley Court.

Main duties and responsibilities
1
To act as an independent and autonomous practitioner providing a high standard of
physiotherapy service to DMRC lower limb in-patients and outpatients.

To provide a positive caring environment, in which patients can expect a high quality
professional service, facilitating the DMRC ‘Mission Statement’

To provide full support to the Team Manager and Physiotherapy Professional Lead
Advisor (PLA) in ensuring the provision of a comprehensive and professional
physiotherapy/rehabilitation service for referred personnel.

To act as clinical physiotherapy lead for the highly specialist area of Lower Legs Team,
recruiting to the MILO study, within DMRC Headley Court.

Identify and initiate training in this highly specialist area to other members of staff.

Conduct complex clinical and functional assessments and maintain good patient records
in accordance with DMRC expectations and requirements.

Criteria
Essential
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree (ie BSc) in Physiotherapy
Postgraduate qualification in Musculoskeletal or Sports
Physiotherapy.
Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP)
Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Experience/Knowledge
Extensive postgraduate experience in musculoskeletal or sports
physiotherapy practice
Ability to use clinical reasoning skills to provide an accurate clinical
diagnosis.
Experience of dictating admission summaries, review letters and
referring to other health care professionals
Formulating, developing and delivering a specialised individualised
treatment programme
Previous experience working with the military
Using complex specialised clinical equipment such as Alter-G
treadmill and LASAR posture.
Communicating and influencing within an interdisciplinary team
environment.
Experience of working with patients
Skills
Clinical examination of lower-limb musculoskeletal conditions.
Diagnosis and treatment of lower-limb musculoskeletal conditions.
Interpreting clinical findings and images (e.g. MRI).
Training junior physiotherapists and other health professionals.
