Board of Directors Action Form
To:
ACRL Board of Directors
Subject:
Proposal to Design Professional Development Opportunities Regarding the
Intersections of Scholarly Communications and Information Literacy
Submitted by:
Carrie Donovan, Chair, Student Learning and Information Literacy Committee;
Merinda Hensley, Vice Chair, Student Learning and Information Literacy Committee; Claire
Stewart, Chair, Research and Scholarly Environment Committee; Shan Sutton, Vice Chair,
Research and Scholarly Environment Committee; Joyce Ogburn, Chair, Intersections of
Scholarly Communications & Information Literacy Task Force
Date submitted:
June 5, 2015
BACKGROUND:
In the Fall (2014), the Chair and Vice-Chair of ACRL’s Student Learning & Information Literacy
Committee met with the Chair of the Intersections of Scholarly Communications & Information Literacy
Task Force to discuss the possibilities for moving forward some of the Task Force’s initiatives following
the completion of their charge in June 2015. The Task Force has been very successful in bringing the
importance of “intersections” to academic librarians across a variety of types of academic institutions.
The leaders of these three groups concluded that the ideal scenario would be for ACRL to create a new
professional development opportunity that builds librarians’ capacity (regardless of job function) in the
areas and intersections of scholarly communication and information literacy such that their natural,
organic combination becomes part of librarians’ leadership and campus initiatives.
The attached proposal explains more fully the rationale for a new professional development opportunity,
stipulates a timeline, estimates costs, and identifies funding sources for its creation.
ACTION RECOMMENDED: That the ACRL Board of Directors discuss the attached proposal and
approve the creation of a new ACRL professional development
opportunity about the intersections of scholarly communications &
information literacy.
IF PERTINENT: Have other stakeholders been consulted? If so, please identify stakeholders
and their comments about this action.
Yes – We consulted with members of our committees and the members of the Task Force on the
Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy. The members of the three groups
enthusiastically endorse these recommendations. We also consulted with ACRL staff members as we
drafted and revised the proposal.
Electronic submission is preferred for all Board actions. If electronic submission of the entire document is not possible, please send
the Action Form to ACRL Program Officer Allison Payne electronically at apayne@ala.org and the remainder in hard copy.

Student Learning
Goal: Librarians transform student learning, pedagogy, and instructional practices through creative and

ACRL programs, services, and publications that target education, advocacy, and member engagement.
FISCAL AND STAFFING IMPACT:
A modest amount of funding would be required for the initial curriculum design phase (we estimate

planning logistics and the business side of managing a new processional development (agreements,
reimbursements, etc.).
