Imagine studying Tibetan culture in China, women’s studies in Costa Rica, or participating in service learning in India! Studying
abroad is one of the best ways to expose yourself to different ideas and perspectives, participate in research and projects not
available in Idaho, learn more about yourself and another culture, and earn Boise State credit while doing it!
This guide, along with the other resources in International Learning Opportunities, provides the tools you need to plan and apply
for a program, including information about program sites and pre-approved courses for sociology majors. Involve your
major/minor advisor as you choose a program and prepare for your time abroad so you do not prolong graduation. Study
Abroad is a great opportunity, so be proactive and start planning early!

YES! Early planning for study abroad helps you make cost effective program decisions, and it helps you prepare your finances
through savings, scholarships, and financial aid. Federal financial aid applies to study abroad and, in some cases, your eligibility
will increase to cover additional expenses. Most academic scholarships apply, and there are BSU and national study abroad
scholarships available as well. Some students actually pay less studying abroad than they do at Boise State! For more
information on financial aid resources for study abroad, visit: http://international.boisestate.edu/sa/paying-for-study-abroad/
Yes, as long as you participate in an approved study abroad program. A list of pre-approved classes is located at the end of this
document. You may take other classes at other locations, but you will need to submit courses for approval from your
Department Chair prior to your departure. The credits you earn abroad will be posted on your BSU transcript and the grades
you earn will be averaged into your Boise State GPA.
You can choose to study abroad for a summer, semester, or entire year. You can also study abroad multiple times, it's up to you
and how you can fit this experience into your time as a student! If you are planning to study a foreign language, it is highly
recommended that you seriously consider studying overseas for a full academic year. This will allow you time to immerse
yourself in your host culture and become proficient in the language you are studying. Time will fly, so consider this aspect as well
while selecting the length of your course of international study.
You may study abroad as a second-semester freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior.
As a sophomore/junior you have more flexibility in the classes you can take abroad
and apply to your degree program at Boise State than you would as a senior. Alternatively,
as a second-semester freshman, you may still be adjusting to life at Boise State. Studying
abroad involves a great deal of cultural adjustment, so the two combined may be too stressful.
It all depends on your level of independence, maturity, sense of adventure, degree program!

partner with USAC, but there are other programs you may study with as well. If you do not wish to study at any of these sites,
visit the Boise State Education Abroad website at http://boisestate.abroadoffice.net/index.html to check out programs in other
