Did You Know? More than $15 billion worth of medical supplies are discarded each year in the United States. At the same time, less fortunate countries are in desperate need of medical supplies. Fever Relief Fund (FRF) closes this health care gap by connecting those who have with those who hope. FRF procures medical and surgical supplies and equipment (crutches, wheelchairs, scalpels, syringes, gloves, antibiotics, beds, exam tables etc.) and delivers them to health care providers in Ghana West Africa FRF collects opened but unused, and new but unneeded medical supplies and equipment from hospitals, manufacturers, and distributors, diverting them from landfills and furnaces, and shipping them for use in the areas of Ghana where FRF provides services. The results of these efforts save thousands of pounds of excess medical supplies and equipment from landfills and incinerators that, for various reasons, hospitals and medical companies discard. FRF accepts donations of unused, unexpired medical supplies and used but functioning biomedical equipment through the organization’s medical supply recovery program. FRF works with hospitals all over the United States to set up recovery programs, so the hospital staff can efficiently recycle their surplus medical supplies. The program includes regular pick-up service of donated supplies. Every day, US hospitals prepare for surgeries and procedures by opening instrument and supply packs. Most of these valuable goods are never used, though, due to government regulations, these supplies must be discarded. FRF collects these supplies, which never had patient contact, to be used to save lives in Africa. While American doctors throw away sutures that have never been used, medical professionals throughout the world are washing, sun drying and reusing sutures on numerous patients daily in order to care for their patients. Accomplishments To Date In 2013, FRF will be making 17 shipments of medical supplies and equipment to 10 Government hospitals in Ghana, West Africa. These donated articles are of immeasurable assistance to the FRF health care programs overseas, often making the difference between continuing or closing hospitals and clinics. The goal of FRF is to raise $346,000 for the shipping program. FRF volunteers will gather, sort, repair, catalog, pack and ship items ranging from needles, syringes and bandages to incubators, computers, ultra sound and operating tables as donations to 10 hospitals. Cost Per Each Shipment The cost of sending one 8 by 8 by 40-foot container is approximately $30,000. The shipments of medical supplies will not be shipped without the support of contributors and donors. FRF is actively seeking funders and sponsors to bring the message of hope to the people of Ghana through tangible medical supplies and equipment. FEVER RELIEF FUND CLOTHING PROJECT (Jerome Bettis Clothing Project) 09/01/2013 till 09/01/2017 Did You Know? Due to poverty, the worldwide demand for second hand clothing is on the rise. FRF collects; packs and ships used clothing overseas to help orphans and village communities throughout Ghana, who are truly in need of these basic necessities. Forty-foot containers of clothing are shipped to Ghana 15 times a year, benefiting countless children and youth in extreme poverty. For those items too big or not appropriate due to political or cultural reasons, FRF donates these items locally to a ministry that distributes clothes to the poor and needy. In times of famine, drought or civil unrest, specific challenges face the children in FRF programs. When possible, these needs are fulfilled by sending containers of humanitarian relief items including blankets, nursery kits, school kits, toys, and many other needed items. The programs request specific items so that what they receive is actually put to use immediately, with minimum waste. Accomplishments To Date FRF has clothed over 30,000 desperately needy children in Ghana. Cost Per Each Shipment The cost of sending one 8 by 8 by 40-foot container is approximately $12,000. The shipments of books cannot go out without the support of donors and partners. FEVER RELIEF FUND BOOK PROJECT (Shawn Springs Book Project) 08/16/2013 till 08/16/2017 Did You Know? A majority of children in Ghana grow up without books, while U.S. bookshelves and landfills overflow with books no longer read. Ghana, at 46 percent, has the highest percentage of illiteracy in the world. Books are the key to increasing literacy, and literacy is the number tool out of poverty. 20 percent of teachers in Ghana teach without book and writing resources. Many adult Africans lose their ability to read due to a lack of reading materials FRF Book Project brings gently used books to Ghanaian communities that have lots of eager readers but very few books. In addition, libraries are built in Africa by connecting book drive organizers in the United States with African communities in need. FRF volunteers program organizes book drives and community events to help ship books to Ghana. The goals are to improve literacy, education, and self-empowerment. Many African schools do not have adequate resources to develop strong readers. Textbooks are limited as is access to a wide range of books required to develop reading skills. Literacy and education are critical to breaking the cycle of poverty. FRF has partnered with local government agencies in Ghana whose focus is education and empowerment. FRF partners include Unilever Ghana volunteers, National Service staff of Ghana, Ministry of Education and University of Ghana. Most parents do not have the means to purchase books on their own and there is often a limited supply of children and young adult books available in the communities. By creating a culture of literacy the anticipation is that there will be a greater demand for books in the future, thereby encouraging a local book economy to developing Countries.
