Optional Research sessions, paid by LIS, may be held for Peer Writing Tutors and Mentors. Trained PWTs and
FYMS may substitute this for 4,5, or 6. Other optional sessions may be available.
Attendance policy for PWTs and FYMs
We expect you to attend regularly scheduled afternoon training sessions. Makeup sessions are for mentors and
tutors who have legitimate conflicts (sports practice, orchestra, job interview, or a lecture required for a
class). In advance of the regular session, please e-mail for permission to attend a makeup session. Make-ups
will be given only with permission and in advance for a valid reason. E-mail Maggie Morris for permission
(mkmorris@middlebury.edu) Maggie will consult with Mary Ellen Bertolini for PWTs and Mary Ellen Bertolini
and Yonna McShane for FYSMs, and then inform you have if you have permission to attend a makeup session
with Maggie and/or Cate.
How to Get Paid for Peer Writing Tutors and FYS Mentors
1. Obtain a blue Student Employment Card from the Student Employment Office. (The Student Employment office is
located on the second floor of the Service Building. The office is open Monday through Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm.) To do
this, you must fill out your I-9 Employment Eligibility and W4 Tax Withholding forms. Typically, students present an
original Passport (expired okay) OR a picture I.D. WITH a Birth Certificate OR Social Security Card. Please visit
http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/business/seo for more information on this process and for a more extensive list of
documents that you can present.
2. Log your hours on Banner Web. If you do not know how to do this, please refer to the “Banner Web Time Entry Quick
Reference” sheet. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask Maggie. When you enter your time, do not enter
hours in the Overtime field, unless you work more than 40 hours in a week. (You may not work more than 20 hours per
week except during break!) *Because our pay week ends on Friday, PWTs and FYSMs who work on Saturday or Sunday
after the time sheet is due, should put those hours on the next time sheet.
3. Please keep an accurate record of your tutoring on a paper or electronic log sheet. Please submit paper log sheets to the
CTLR or electronic log sheets to Maggie Morris via e-mail (mkmorris@middlebury.edu) no later than 5 p.m. on the Friday
at the end of a Pay Period. Please see the calendar for exact dates.
4. Be sure to submit your hours on Banner Web by 5 p.m. on the Friday at the end of a Pay Period. It is important that
you keep an accurate record of your time. Note: Per Middlebury College policy, falsifying time sheets is grounds for
termination. This includes saving all your hours until the end of the semester.
