This class is a technical laboratory based science course. A significant part of your grade is based upon your participation in lab
investigations. It is your responsibility to safely and correctly complete laboratory activities in a timely manner. Your grade, and the
privilege of participating in future laboratory activities will be determined by the effectiveness with which you complete assigned lab
activities.
In order to complete lab investigations safely and correctly, it is absolutely critical that
you thoroughly understand all written instructions provided by your teacher. To help
you with this understanding, I will require that you carefully read through the entire lab
manual and then translate the written lab procedures into a visual flow chart. You
might think of this flow chart as a comic strip that tells the story of how to complete
the step by step procedure for the lab. Following is a set of instructions for building a
flow chart of laboratory procedures:




Draw a box with a detailed picture for each step in the lab procedure
Each box that you draw should have at least 2 written labels
Be sure to include key pieces of information such as which chemicals go where, and how much
Include all numerical measurements and quantities
As practice, your task is to translate the following procedure for making a grilled cheese sandwich into a visual flow chart:
1. Using a butter knife, spread a tablespoon size blob of butter evenly onto one side of a slice of bread. Repeat this with a
second slice of bread.
2. Place a skillet onto the stove top and turn the burner on to medium heat.
3. Place one of your bread slices into the skillet, butter side down.
4. Quickly, but carefully, place 2 cheese slices onto the bread, then place the second slice of bread on top of the cheese. Be
sure to place this second slice of bread with the buttered side facing upward.
5. Gently press down on the sandwich with a spatula to ensure that the sandwich grills evenly on the bottom.
6. After 2 minutes, flip the sandwich over with the spatula and grill the top side for 2 minutes.
7. Turn off the stove.
8. Using a spatula, carefully transfer the sandwich from the skillet to a plate.
