SPECIFICATION
Resonator
1. Background
The Energy group in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST) at the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) is a group pursuing nanoscale measurements on materials for energy
generation and storage. This acquisition for a resonator compatible with pulsed electron paramagnetic
resonance (EPR) measurements carried out at liquid helium temperatures and 34 GHz will allow
characterization of materials and processes critical to energy conversion and guide development and
innovation of emerging energy technologies.
2. Objectives
The CNST is a user facility focused on providing and developing new measurement capabilities to advance use
and adoption of nanotechnology. A critical requirement of the Center is that add-on equipment must provide
compatibility and integration with existing instrumentation and software.
3. Scope
Contract is for a 34 GHz resonator for use with an existing pulsed electron paramagnetic spectrometer in the
CNST at NIST.
4. Specifications
The resonator shall consist of new (not used or refurbished) equipment that can be operated in an existing
Oxford Instruments’ liquid helium CF935 cryostat and interfaced to a pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance
spectrometer system operating at 34 GHz.
The resonator must meet or exceed the following minimum requirements:
a. Accommodate sample dimensions of up to 2 mm outer diameter and up to 8 mm length.
b. Have a variable quality factor ranging from 150 to 500.
c. Provide at least 150 MHz bandwidth when 150 W of incident power is applied.
d. Include an optical window for sample excitation in the range 355 nm to 800 nm.
e. Support repeated temperature cycling from 4 K to 300 K.
5. Delivery
Contractor shall deliver the resonator within six (6) months ARO.
6. Inspection/Acceptance
Item will be inspected upon arrival at NIST for damage and compatibility with cryostat system. Item will be
accepted when NIST has determined that the equipment performs in the cryostat system. Inspection and
acceptance shall be completed within three (3) months after the receipt of the item. Technical Point of
Contact (TPOC) will issue a written acceptance notice to the Contractor.
