Overcoming Obstacles to Doing Research in a Private Practice Setting
An ideal that ABCT clinician members aspire to -- contributing to science -- is difficult to carry out. Many obstacles arise and must be addressed, including: Finding the time to do research, designing studies that can be carried out in a private practice setting, funding the research, determining when review by an institutional review board is needed and getting access to one, and keeping up with the literature.
This panel convenes several clinicians who have successfully overcome the many impediments to conducting research in a private practice setting. Jacqueline Persons, Polina Eidelman, and Janie Hong describe the infrastructure they are building and some of the studies they are conducting at the
Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Science Center in Oakland, California. Travis Osborne, from the
Evidence Based Treatment Centers of Seattle, describes his group’s solutions to common obstacles, and he also describes the freestanding institutional review board, the Behavioral Health Research Collective, that he and a group of others established to support the research of a group of practitioners. Cannon
Thomas describes his strategies for conducting research and statistical consulting in a private practice group, the San Francisco Group for Evidence-Base Psychotherapy, and Jason Luoma describes the structure to support research that he and his colleagues have established at the Portland Psychotherapy
Clinic, Research, and Training Center, and some of the projects that are underway there. After the panelists make brief presentations, we will open the floor for questions and discussion by audience members.
