NACEE - Educational Talent Search Program POSITION SUMMARY: The Educational Specialist will provide direct, educational outreach services to disadvantaged students from the identified target area's participant population. They will: Be knowledgeable of strategies that promote and factors that inhibit secondary promotion, high school graduation, and college enrollment. Possess the ability to foster relationships with other agencies that provide similar or complementary services to similar population. Monitor activities and collaborative efforts in accordance with established goals and objectives of the Educational Talent Search Program. Assist with student application and selection procedures for middle and high school completion and the college matriculation process. Assist with staff trainings, and other stakeholders using regulations, OMB Circulars, EDGAR, college policy and procedures. Assist in planning college visits and other events designed to motivate students to attend and graduate from post-secondary institutions. Assist with follow-up activities as directed by the president/executive director. Assist in the recordkeeping system that facilitates program planning, development, and evaluation. REPORTING AND SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the Director of TRiO Programs or designee CLASSIFICATION: Grant-funded position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Work directly with the ETS Team to ensure the goals and objectives of the ETS project are met. 2. Provide academic advising and counseling information services to student participants and their parents through structured individual and group meetings and workshops throughout the year. 3. Provide information relative to financial literacy focusing specifically on personal finance counseling in addition to the financial aid process to support ETS participants' achieve their educational and personal goals in addition to offsetting the costs of college attendance. 4. Provide professional support and assistance in ETS program activities related to student admission, financial aid, academic advising, registration, orientation, graduation, and overall guidance in an effort to meet ETS program participant's needs. 5. Help with the coordination of programming relative to the ETS program, particularly those related to recruitment, retention, graduation, and transfer. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. Support and participate in both in and out of classroom lives of ETS participants in an effort to enhance their development and learning experiences. Maintain detailed records of all aspects of students’ progress including academic, social, personal, etc., that would aid, or impede their overall success. Monitor students' academic progress bi-monthly contact logs, phone calls, electronic communications and other written correspondence. Assist in student outcomes research and agencies evaluation. Assist the ETS Team with completing the programs' Annual Performance Report. Conduct appropriate referrals for students as necessary. Actively engage in the promotion and marketing of the TS project. Assist with all aspects of program review and student retention efforts such as surveys, focus groups, orientation sessions, parent workshops and intervention groups. Build and maintain positive working relationships target school faculty, administrators, and parents/guardians to assist program participants with academic advising, counseling, consultation, referral, and information services. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs other duties as assigned for the betterment of each program participant consistent with the role and required functions of this position. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee typically works indoors in an environment protected from the weather. Moderate travel may be required. Physical activities include the ability to carry appropriate recruitment materials sometimes weighing up to 40 pounds. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or other human services field is required. Demonstrated sensitivity and experience with students from low-income, disadvantaged educational backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to assist students in a culturally diverse environment. A minimum of three-years experience advising, counseling, or volunteer work in a related field and working with economically and educationally disadvantaged persons. FAFSA knowledge and experience in financial aid and financial literacy. Working knowledge along with comfort level in assisting students with college and university admissions, transfer policies, and financial assistance processes.
