Topic: Healthy environment and recycling
Task: Students will give an oral presentation in class, with visual support using Microsoft
PowerPoint, on what their family does for the environment (Was macht meine Familie für
die Umwelt?)
Context: This is the final task in a unit of work on Healthy environment and recycling.
Students have learnt vocabulary related to the various types of pollution (e.g. die
Plastiktüte, altes Papier, der Müll) and have also learnt present tense verbs related to
environmental practices (e.g. sparen, kaufen, recyceln, werfen).

Description
Students will give an oral presentation in class, with visual support using Microsoft
PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will contain six slides (title slide plus five information slides
written in German) on what their family does for the environment. Each information slide
must contain at least one image and one full sentence of German text. Students will use
the PowerPoint to support their oral presentation, with spoken text differing from the
written text on the PowerPoint, e.g. the written text may say Das ist mein Papa im
Supermarkt!, with the accompanying spoken text being Am Mittwoch gehen wir
einkaufen. Mein Vater benutzt nie Plastiktüten.
Teacher and students develop explicit marking criteria for the task.

Task: You have already kept a diary (Umwelttagebuch) for one week. You will now use this
information as the basis for an oral presentation in class, with visual support using Microsoft
PowerPoint, on the topic Was macht meine Familie für die Umwelt?

Instructions
You have already kept a diary (Umwelttagebuch) for one week. You will now use this
information as the basis for an oral presentation in class, with visual support using Microsoft
PowerPoint, on the topic Was macht meine Familie für die Umwelt?
1. Take and download your own digital photographs or select images from the web to
illustrate each information slide. (Note: You will need to ensure you correctly attribute
images downloaded from the web.)
2. Use the template provided to develop the text for each slide, both written and spoken.
Your written text must differ from your spoken text. e.g. the written text on your
PowerPoint may be Das ist mein Papa im Supermarkt!, and you could say Am
Mittwoch gehen wir einkaufen. Mein Vater benutzt nie Plastiktüten. Your spoken text
for each slide should be 1-2 sentences.
3. Create your PowerPoint, making sure you have a title slide in German, and a
minimum of five information slides. Each information slide must contain at least one
image and one full sentence of German text.
4. Have your work peer-evaluated, asking the teacher for feedback where necessary.
5. As a class, develop explicit marking criteria for the task.
6. Rehearse your presentation to build confidence in pronunciation, voice projection and
eye contact.
7. Give your presentation to the class, making sure you speak clearly.
8. Present your teacher with an electronic copy of your presentation.
Marking criteria:
In this task you will be marked on your ability to:





use a range of vocabulary appropriate to the topic of Healthy environment and recycling
use a range of grammatical and linguistic structures appropriate to your level of study,
including present tense verbs and appropriate word order
use correct grammar and spelling
speak clearly, using correct pronunciation and intonation
present your information in a clear and organised way, including appropriate images.
