To All Incoming First-Year Students!
Congratulations on being accepted to the Bachelor of Film and Television degree program at Sheridan
College! Over the next few weeks you will receive a number of notifications from the College. Please
pay close attention to these, as some messages will contain information upon which you will need to take
action in a timely fashion. The purpose of this letter is to simply pass along some key program- and
course-specific points.
myOTR Start of Term
A great deal of term start-up information can be found at
http://myotr.sheridaninstitute.ca/sot_fall_2015.html Before you call or email us, point your browser there you'll find answers to the most common questions!
Timetable
As there aren't any electives in your first semester, your timetables will be set automatically and you will
be able to preview them at the beginning of August via http://myotr.sheridaninstitute.ca/timetable.html
Any questions regarding your timetable should be directed to the Office of the Registrar at the Trafalgar
campus. The OTR gets very busy as the term approaches and even busier during Week One, so you
should get in as soon as you can if you have any questions or concerns. As the office gets busier, you
will need to make an appointment.
Laptop and Other Equipment
As BFTV is a Mobile Program, you'll need a laptop computer. Apple laptops are recommended and
specifications are attached at the bottom of this letter. However, please note that you will not find
significantly powerful laptops necessary in first year. Your courses that utilize media software like
the Adobe Creative Cloud or Pro Tools in will be taught in labs with computers with that software
installed. Otherwise, you’ll need a computer for creating text documents and performing research so a
laptop or tablet that you already own may very well suffice and you might decide to put off a significant
laptop purchase until you enter Second Year (higher-end MacBook Pros are certainly recommended at
that time).
In addition, you'll require the following sundry purchases:
Cinematography Kit: Heat-resistant work gloves will be needed. Those available at most local
and big-box hardware stores will suffice. If you already own a light meter, you should bring that,
but it isn't required as there are light meters available in our Centralized Equipment Room.
Headphones: You will require professional headphones that at least partially enclose the
ear. Earbuds are not appropriate. “Beats” headphones are not appropriate (and are obscenely
overpriced). Also, noise-isolating headphones are typically not appropriate and are definitely not
required. We recommend Sony MDR7506 or Audio-Technica ATH-M30x or ATH-M40x. If you
do not already own a pair of professional headphones, the street price on these models is
between $80.00 and $120.00.

Campus Orientation
There will be an Orientation Meeting for all First Year Degree students on Thursday, September 3rd
between 1:00pm and 2:30pm. The location for the meeting will be announced shortly but it will, of
course, be at the Trafalgar Campus.
BFTV Pre-Term Orientation
Immediately following the Campus Orientation on Thursday, September 3rd, there will be a First Year
BFTV Orientation from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in room D102. Your attendance is strongly recommended!
That will be also be a good day to tick off a few things on your "To Do List" including picking up your
OneCard (your student card), parking pass, checking out the Bookstore, locating classrooms, etc. Line
ups get longer and longer as the term approaches and will be at their maximum length during the first
week of classes. My advice is to try to get as much done in August or during the week before classes as
you possibly can!
BFTV COMMON WEEK ONE – New This Year!
All BFTV students will have a modified Week One schedule (Tuesday, September 8th – Friday,
September 11th) that will include important training sessions for equipment and software, studio
orientation and workshops. The only class that you will attend at your regularly scheduled time is your
breadth course (Composition and Rhetoric). To get things started, ALL 1ST AND 2ND YEAR BFTV
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO MEET AT 9:00AM ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH IN THE MAIN
GYM OF THE ATHLETIC CENTRE. The rest of your schedule for that week will be announced via your
Sheridan email address towards the end of August.

Important Notes, Please read!
• The Sheridan Apple Store is available online at: http://applestore.sheridancollege.ca. Please check for special education prices throughout the summer.
• Students can purchase online or from any Apple Store at Education pricing, provided they show a valid student number. (Sheridan's store might be cheaper though)
• Using a Mac Laptop with the AppleCare Protection Plan is strongly recommended. You get direct access to software and hardware support from Sheridan Mac
Technologists along with direct access to Sheridan's own Apple Service Repair Centre, allowing you to have your laptop serviced without leaving the College.
If you already own a Windows laptop that meets or exceeds the Performance Model's processor, memory & hard drive requirements listed above, along with the system
requirements for Avid Media Composer 8.3, it will be allowed but with limited support. (avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/compatibility/Media-Composer-System-Requirements)
• It is also strongly recommended that Bachelor of Film/TV students choose the Performance Model. Some large projects can be very processor & graphics demanding.
• Mainstream models are valid for only 1 Academic year (Sept through to August) after which you may be required to upgrade or purchase a new model.
• Apple's Back to School Promotions usually begin mid to late summer. We recommend waiting to purchase during the promotion.
• Software Provided: All Arts programs get Microsoft Office & Adobe Software. Additionally, Bachelor of Film/TV, Journalism & Journalism New Media get Avid Media
Composer. Bachelor of Film/TV also gets Pro Tools on a sign-out basis.
