Measurements in industry are done in thousands of an inch (1/1000 inch). On micrometer
barrels an inch is divided into 40 divisions each representing twenty-five thousands of an inch
(25/1000 inch) . The figure below is a representation of one inch on a micrometer sleeve. Each
number represents 100 thousands of an inch (four divisions of twenty-five thousands of an
inch).

Above example “A” points to the line directly below number “1” it is four increments to the
right of “0” four 25/1000 of an inch, or 100/1000 of an inch. Written as .100 or one hundred
thousands of an inch.
Example “B” points to a line two increments to the left of number 3. The number 3 represents
three hundred thousands of an inch (.300) the two increments to the left of three represent 2
twenty-five thousands of an inch or fifty thousands of and inch (.025+.025=.050). In total
.300+.050= .350 or three hundred fifty thousands. B= .350
Example “C” .600+.025= .625 or six hundred twenty-five thousands of an inch
Example “D” .800+.075(three increments) = .875 or eight hundred seventy-five thousands.
