Everything You Wanted to Know About Youth Challenge Tournament Nationals – Mar 27th–30th, 2014 HAMILTON, ON What is the Youth Challenge? This will be the 54th competition that highlights our youth bowlers in Alberta and across Canada since 1961. Who can enter the Youth Challenge? Open to All members of the Canadian 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association (C5PBA) in the Southwestern Zone from 13- 18 years of age as of December 31st of the current season. Do I have to bowl in a League or YBC? No, there is no requirement to bowl a league or YBC. What is the Southwestern Zone? Lethbridge and area including Pincher Creek & west to the BC border & East to Taber & South to the US border & North to Nanton, formerly called Zone 8. When is the Zone Round? The Zone Round is scheduled during the latter part of November each year. The Provincial Round is held at the end of January or beginning of February. What happens at the Zone Round? This event starts with individual entries in the Southwest area that bowl a block of 8 games to qualify for 3 teams that represent one of our Zone Contingents at the Provincial Level. The 1st place girl and boy are declared our Local Champions. How do I make a team? Fifteen bowlers from our Zone advance to the Provincials with the top 5 girls and the top 5 boys competing on the girls and boys teams. The next 2-3 girls and boys make up our mixed team. Where do I enter the Youth Challenge? Entry Forms are distributed to the Southwestern Zone Bowlers’ Associations and through the local centres in early November. What is the entry fee? In the Southwestern Zone, the only entry fee is $30 at the Zone Round which goes towards the cost of your lineage ($42 for 8 games). The balance is subsidized by the Lethbridge 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association (L5PBA). Who pays for other costs like travel? All bowlers from Lethbridge who advance to the Youth Challenge (YC) Provincials are assisted with all* of their travelling expenses including a bus, hotel and meal expenses as well as their uniform shirt and team pictures. To send our local bowlers to Provincials averages about $450 per bowler paid for by the L5PBA at basically no cost to the youth bowler. The L5PBA also will assist with uniform pants or skirts every 2 years. What happens after the Zone Round? There are coaches chosen for each team and a manager makes arrangements to attend the Provincials somewhere in Alberta. Teams then compete in a single game round robin (currently) against each contingent in a match play format and receive awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Bowlers are also qualifying individually to form a mixed team from the top 3 girls and 3 boys across the Province to represent Alberta at the Canadian Youth Challenge 5 Pin Bowling Championships. Scholarships are awarded to the 1st place girl and boy at the Provincials sponsored by the Bowling Federation of Alberta (BFA). What involvement is required from parents of bowlers who make the team? *The bowlers’ parents or representative are expected to volunteer for L5PBA bingo, casino, at our local 5 pin sanctioned tournaments or on our local Board of Directors. Ensure that your bowler completes the appropriate paperwork, attends practices and follows the rules & guidelines. Is there a Dress Code? There is a Dress Code implemented beginning at the Zone Round. See the A5PBA Dress Code requirements on the entry form. What does the Alberta 5 Pin Bowlers Association (A5PBA) do? The A5PBA provides funding to the Host City of the Provincial Event. The A5PBA pays for all the bowlers’ lineage and a Victory Celebration as well as administration costs. The average cost to the A5PBA is approximately $60 per bowler at the Provincials and $500 per bowler to for the National Event. A5PBA purchases the pictures and Uniform shirts for the competitors at the National Event. The A5PBA has implemented a fundraiser for our National Events making it a requirement for all Provincial Participants to sell 2 tickets to an Elimination Raffle Draw held at each event.
