LIGHTHOUSE CINEMA PRESIDENTS GRADE - ROUND 5 One of the great mysteries of TV Soaps. “Who shot JR (Ewing)? Two of the great mysteries of the Lighthouse Cinema Presidents A Grade and Presidents B Grade for the Post-Christmas/Championship Round for 2013/2014 – which teams won, after both the A Grade and B Grade sections finished on a tie of Championship Points? All will be REVEALED AT THE PRIZEGIVING THIS COMING SUNDAY MORNING, 30 th MARCH at the LIGHTHOUSE CINEMA, PETONE at 9.30 am. In Division 1, Upper Hutt (Dawn Wardlaw) were expected to win after a strong Upper Hutt side easily defeated 6th placed Petone 3 (Patsy Puketapu) 6 – 0. It was then expected that the other two contenders Petone 1 (Warren Nelson) and Tawa (Wayne Wilkinson) would split their points in an even match, to give Upper Hutt the win on a platter. However, a dour match, which lasted just on 4 hours, with most sets going to 9-5, 9-8 saw Petone 1 run out the winners 6 – 0. This slightly unexpected 6 – 0 result saw Petone 1 grab a hat full of points which elevated them to equal 1st place with Upper Hutt. Either Upper Hutt or Petone 1 has to win on a countback, but which one? By sheer co-incidence, there is also a tie for 1st place in Division 2 between Petone 2 (Carol Eckersley) and Avalon 1 (Dawn Tubby) when the latter had its colours lowered after four impressive early round victories of 6 – 0, 6 – 0, 6 – 0 and 5 – 1. Despite the late addition of Anna Clulee for Patsy Puketapu, the Petone No. 3 team, that had earlier recorded a narrow win over the well performed Pinehaven team, proved no match for a strong Upper Hutt side of Simon Osborne, Murray Wright, Estelle Marshall and Maree Horne, amassing only 9 games in the 6 sets played, to gift Upper Hutt the championship, or so they thought!! By contrast, Petone 2 (Carol Eckersley) have put up a well organised campaign since the commencement of the 2013/2014 season back in October 2013. By comparison Avalon 1 (Dawn Tubby) began the season with a variety of team members, before settling on their line-up of Wayne Dahlberg, Alex Bridger, Dawn Tubby and Mona Hawkins. Bruce Anderson (Petone 2) had a good day winning all three of the matches played. Petone 2 winning Round 5 by 4 – 2 to have bragging rights for Round 5 and pushing their team to equal first on points in the Championship alongside Avalon 1 (Dawn Tubby) but who will win when the final votes on overall sets and points for the season are counted? Maungaraki (Mike Berridge) were head and shoulders above the bottom four teams in Division 2. In Round 5 they had to contend with fourth-placed Lower Hutt (Mieke Wensvoort). Kirsty Alexander (Maungaraki) was impressive winning her three matches 9 -1, 9 – 1, 9 – 1. Maungaraki running out comfortable winners 4 – 2. 1 At stake in the final match in Division 2 was to see which of Lower Hutt 2 (Kathy Brabin) or Avalon 2 (Paul Alcock) would carry over the holders of the Wooden Spoon from the 2013/2014 season over the winter months to the start of the 2014/2015 season. Lower Hutt 2 were made to work hard before running out winners. Angela Hamilton Avalon 2 in contention for a Most Improved Player award after fairly diffident early season form which augers well for next summer.
