RESOURCE Template Emails Improve Your Waste Management Please feel free to use this text in an email to your landlord and edit content as appropriate This template is produced by Go Green www.gogreenbusiness.co.uk Dear [insert landlord’s name here] As part of the 2015 Bristol European Green Capital year, our organisation is striving to be recognised as a sustainable business by taking part in the Go Green programme. Through participation in Go Green we strongly believe that we have the opportunity to make a positive difference to the local environment in which we live and work. Go Green is asking businesses to take a lead in reducing our environmental impact as a result of our waste production. Each year England generates 177 million tonnes of waste (data from DEFRA). When this is sent to landfill it not only costs businesses like us money but it is takes up valuable land space, pollutes the local soil and water and contributes to climate change through methane production. Our business wants to be part of the ‘zero waste economy’ where resources are fully valued, even at the end of their useful life for us. Currently, as a tenant in your building we have limited control over how our waste is stored or which suppliers provide waste collection. This impacts our environmental footprint and subsequently the ability to be seen as a sustainable business. As a result, we request your support and assistance to implement a waste management scheme on site that prioritises waste reuse, composting and recycling above sending waste to landfill. This will reduce our environmental impact and resource use. We request your assistance in providing facilities on site for us to store waste for reuse and recycling or composting where possible. We also request that you require your waste collectors to clearly define their green credentials and encourage them to maximise the amount of waste they send for reuse, recycling and composting. If this is not possible we ask that you consider changing to a green waste collection company that does, as there are plenty of local companies that offer this service, and often at the same price as conventional service. For more information on waste management please see the Wrap website http://www.wrap.org.uk/ and the Bristol Reuse project http://www.bristolreuse.com/ We look forward to hearing from you.
