Go over pg. 150-1, Reading: Author’s Purpose and vocabulary, page 152-3, go over homophones.
Introduce Unit 2 Short Stories….pg 170-1 …From The Author’s Desk DVD to introduce the author, Walter Dean
Myers and the genre, short stories. Look at other books he has written. Add notes to Reading
Notebook….elements of short stories and literary devices. Do check your understanding and go over it, page 173.
English – Add notes to English Notebook on verbs and there tenses.
Students will read their mystery stories orally and get feedback to help them with their re-writes.
Tuesday – October 18, 2011
Spelling – Unit 7 Affixes
Go over the meaning of the different prefixes and suffixes used. Introduce new words. Write words three times
each…1-15. Do page 56.
Reading – Introduce story…”The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter Dean Myers.” Add notes about
foreshadowing and flashbacks. Go over what terms to look for when looking for these elements. Introduce the
story add vocabulary words to notebooks, read silently and answer reading check questions.
English – action verbs page 73 and 74
Students will read their mystery stories orally and get feedback to help them with their re-writes.

Spelling – Write words 16-30 three times each. Go over page 56 grouping words by prefixes and suffixes. Do page
57 on word meaning and structure.
Reading – Quiz….read story orally and discuss, go over reading check questions.
English – go over 74…Transitive and intransitive verbs page 75 and 76.
