Getting the most out of your course and what you
need to consider
In order to get the most out of the training courses you and your manager, as
appropriate, should spend some time considering the following:
Before the course:
Participant:
 Why do I want to go on the course?

Is it relevant to my job role and responsibilities?

Is it a mandatory or essential requirement that I attend this course

Has my manager agreed or approved my attendance and have I got
agreement on who will pay for the course?

Due to my working hours/constraints, will I be able to attend the course on
time and will I need to leave work early to get to the venue on time?

If I don’t get there on time I may be turned away and still be charged in full for
non-attendance

If I cancel between 2/3 weeks of course date, I or my school/setting will be
charged £25

If I cancel within 1 week of the date, I or my school/setting will charged the full
price
Manager:
 Is it relevant to their job role and responsibilities, do I want them to share their
learning with the team?

Have I approved their attendance and agreed to who will pay for the course

Will I need to let them finish early to ensure they get to the venue on time or
do I expect them to attend the course in their own time?

Do I need to prepare them for the content of the course, e.g. relevance to
work?

If they cancel within 3 weeks of the course date, they or my school/setting will
be charged £25

If they cancel within 1 week of the date, they or my school/setting will charged
the full price
After the course:
Participant:
 What have I learnt from the training course and how can I put what I’ve learnt
into practice

Have I completed an evaluation form and were my comments constructive?

How will I share what I’ve learnt with my manager and team?

Do I need to consider further training courses or remember to record a
renewal date if the course is accredited.
Manager:
 Ensure that opportunities to put the training into practice are available

