.- Agricultural Genetics PROF. ADRIANO MAROCCO COURSE AIMS The course covers the fundamental elements of genetics: 1) inheritance of mendelian and quantitative traits; 2) population genetics; 3) structure, organization, functioning, variation and epigenetic modification of the genetic material. COURSE CONTENT Mendelian genetics, chromosomal basis of inheritance, extention of the mendelian genetic analysis. Association, recombination, genetic and chromosome mapping. Extrachromosomal inheritance: mapping in plastids and mitochondria; molecular genetics of cell organelles; maternal effects. Quantitative traits and quantitative genetics: the multiple factors hypothesis, heritability, response to selection. Population genetics: genetic variation in natural populations, the Hardy-Weinberg method, evolutionary factors (mutation, selection, migration, random drift, inbreeding). Structure and replication of the genetic material, translation, protein synthesis and genetic code; regulation of gene expression and development in eukaryotes. Organization of the genetic material: chromatin, structure of the eukaryotic chromosome, genomes. Gene, chromosome and genome mutations, genetic transposable elements; epigenetic modifications. Tutorials. Solving problems of mendelian genetics and chromosome mapping. Application of molecular biology methods for nucleic acids purification and analysis.
