MEETING MINUTES
May 1, 2013– 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

1. Welcome: Each member introduced themselves. Tanya Baker-McCue reviewed the
agenda. The CAB was encouraged to ask question and provide ideas and
recommendations. Tanya Baker-McCue reviewed are agreement to not use acronyms or
jargon.
2. Dan Wenz: Gave an orientation of how the room was equipped with new technology.
Jeff commented he felt more comfortable in the room – audio was good for him.
3. Developmental Disability and Autism Awaness Campaigns in March and April:


Billboards were donated by the city of unused spaces - appeared in March and
April
o Obtained confirmation of photo consent from parents
o Appeared in electronic and paper – paper requires payment - payment for
printing funds was donated by DDPC and Disability Right
o Were developed by Monica Crick
o 10,000 – 25, 000 anticipated viewings
o Calls are received from billboard postings
Autism awareness month – April
o CDC publishes number of children diagnosed with Autism – number has
gone down; last year 1 out of 88, this year 1 out of 50.
 March – DD Awareness Month
o Sandy and Suzanne commented it was better this year
 Partners in Awareness Campaign - DDPC & PA
 Apil 5: Governor Martinez’s visit to CDD – a big celebration – Governor was
very gracious.
o Last bill signed by governor to provide coverage for Autism services
through private insurance – it has been policy for years that public
employees were not included
o Approximately 300 people attended
o It is posted on CDD’s website
o Chile’s Fundraiser – Arranged by Amanda Bassett who works at CDD
doing Public Relations/Public Awareness. 15% of the bill was donated to
Autism Programs for Camp Rising Sun.
o Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has a list serve on their website:
http://www.cdd.unm.edu/autism/
 CAB reviewed mock up version of a new brochure of (ASD) programs. It has
gotten confusing to families with all the new programs that have been developed.
o Individual brochures (8) were developed for each program
 They can be selected according to the needs of the family and
inserted into the pocket of the brochure
 Suggestions from the CAB
o Stagger inserts – comments were that hasn’t worked well in past
o Something to identify Autism on the front, not CDD logo
o Add adults in the pictures and address adult needs
o Community and training with different age photos
o Include birth – 6 family training brochure
o Inside flap should include what the program has to offer…..
o Put business card on the inside flap
o Back cover – statement of the CDD’s mission should be shortened
o Have a website link on all brochure’s
o It is presently not family friendly, looks more professional
o On cover possibly have an intro, “Does someone you know have autism”
o Brochures are too wordy – reduce language, maybe bulleted
o Have a testimonials/quotes
o Follow same format
o Have website link on each brochure
o Have a longer description on the back cover
 Distribution will be from here at the center, booths at health fairs, to families
Tour of CDD Space Renovation: Toured the reception area, library, clinic rooms in the west
building and the 4th floor in the east building where administration is housed. All technology
will be completed that week. Training rooms will have the ability to be connected; can
accommodate 130-140 people.
Lunch: Distributed glossy of annual report.
4. New Employee Orientation (NEO): Tanya did an overview of the CAB with power
point presentation – Tanya read Portrayal of People with Disabilities; offered a handout
and a list comparison of appropriate, (people first) and not appropriate terms of disability
language. The new developments will be utilized for new employee orientation (NEO).

 People First Language – Have Marilyn do a 10 min. video clip – possibly do an
interactive piece on tips how to address the person with a disability, ie: talk to the
person, ask how you like to be addressed
 Jeff talked about humanizing – have him do a clip
 Shane was asked to do a video clip, may have to do some coaxing with him
 Discussion on terms used “self-advocate” vs. “advocate” – “youth leader”
becoming a “seasoned” leader
 Focus on ability – community participation
 Dan Wenz will do the recording
Suggestions for Power point:
 Slide 2: Combine slide 2 & 4 – be sure full inclusion of people with disabilities is
included on slide 2
 Slide 3: (DD) Act – spell out Developmental Disabilities Act –
o Needs more information
o Describe the DD Act
o Voice over explaining it
 Slide 4: This slide is where Marilyn and Jeff will have video tapping
o Dan and Joel will assist
 Slide 5: Change self advocate to advocate , language to include CAB provides
input, promotes & guides, includes MDT of different disciplines.
 Slide 6: Take out first bullet. Partner with people with disabilities, etiquette ,
include values, our mission
5. Division Directors Reports:
 Tony Cahill: Disability and Health Policy Division
o 2013 the South West Disability Conference – Will no longer be in the
Convention Center – Will be in Hotel Albuquerque (will offer better
parking, better accessibility) time now for call for papers
- Tony suggested maybe CAB would participate
- Including Employment
-Access to Women’s Healthcare
- Brain Injury Symposium
o Senate Joint Memorial – Handout provided – October is Disability
Awareness Month – now requested that during the month of October
every school provide disability history and awareness instruction in grades
K-12 and higher education provide activities accordingly.
o Disability Employment Month – Working with Governor’s Commission
on Disability to develop public awareness curriculum K-4. United Health
Care is providing assistance

Pat Osborn: Autism and other Developmental Disability Programs
Includes Deaf Blind Program
o Anticipated funding cuts discussed
o Increase in funding for clinical assessments
o 4 outreaches in parts of the state – hard areas Clovis and Ship Rock
(working with Indian Children Programs) there
o Slots now available for adults who have gone undiagnosed or have wrong
diagnosis
o Increasing recreation for individuals who are in transition, ages 16 and
over
o Challenges still exist for leisure time for adolescents and adults
o 3 new Community Programs for individuals and families (which also will
include typical peers)

o Working with Dept. of Health (DOH) on Recreational Respite for social
interaction. Not age specific. Working with agencies.

Dan Wenz: Manager - IT Technical Support
o Updates on remodel – new equipment
o Joel – phone system upgrade
o Website design
o Anderson school of Management – team of grad students worked with IT
- Worked on security
- Annual report useful for students
Sophie Bertran: Early Childhood Learning Network
o Birth to 5 Community Inclusion
o Working on a PreK in depth presentation to administration at public
schools
o Working with NM Head Start to develop Inclusive settings for children
with disabilities
o Special Quest – small contract to focus on inclusion – work scope to be
completed by end of June
o Webinars for transition from Early Intervention to Preschool
- Outcomes for Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
- Eligibility determination requirements
o Scope of work funding cut in half by Special Education Bureau



o 5% cut by Department of Health (DOH) sequester
o More money was funded to Family Infant Toddler Program (FIT) which
the program will have access to.
Christy Barden: Medically Fragile Case Management Program (MFCMP)
o Family Advisory Board (FAB) working on nursing shortage issues
throughout the state. A meeting to pilot Nursing Mentor Program took
place with state, FAB, and other state agencies to initiate a program to
integrate new graduate nurses in Home Health Care.
o First webinar completed by Family Advisory Board (FAB) in March on
Family Centered Care, Nursing in the School and Home, and Palliative
Care and Hospice; The Family Perspective. School nurses and home
health care workers attended state wide. Went very well, evals. very good.
o Suggestion FAB attend the next CAB meeting
o UCED 5 yrs. goals addressed
- Life Span Transition – adult issues with more individuals living
longer
- Partnering with Albuquerque Public School Resource Nurse to
make services better in the school setting for individuals with high
medical needs.
- Mentoring program for FAB to work with families – working
towards branching out to establish in other regions, Farmington has
been targeted initially.
FAB will do hospital visits or make phone contact with families
when they are in town orwhen families are in town for doctor
appointments. This was identified as a support network for
families.
- FAB attended MF annual meeting
- Developed our CDD MF Facebook page
Tanya Baker McCue: Family Community Partnership Division
o
Tanya and Cate met with Regents at UNMH
- Introduced new program – PROJECT SEARCH – 1 Regent has a
daughter with an Intellectual Disability who utilized the program
in Austin, TX who, upon completion, became employed at the
hospital. The Regent has promoted championed the program for
NM
- The project fulfills an unmet need in business settings of under
filled, high turnover jobs
- Fulfills unmet need of employment for individuals with
disabilities; is an 18 mo. internship program, 8 wk. rotations in
various jobs throughout the hospital, with hopes of gainful
employments after completion through gaining new job skills
- Pilot – 1 yr. funding startup costs
- Values inclusion and minimum wage
- 196 Programs already established nationwide

o Post- Secondary Education Alliance (PSE): Continue working with DDPC to
develop a state wide alliance for Postsecondary Education, uncertain of
continued funding.
-Working towards starting up certificate programs in community colleges
in 2-3 different locations.
Sandy Heimerl:
o Graduating 24 LEND students on Fri. – 3 attended Conference at DC on
Disability Policy with Phyllis Shingle; one trainee was a self -advocate who
attended.
o Looking for families & trainee’s for LEND. Host families are matched with a
LEND trainee for about 20 hrs. a year
o Developing an orientation to support the role of the host family faculty –
-Judy Greenfield would like more information on the role
o Joel Nudi:
o Attended DC Disability Policy – he learned a lot on national issues – met
with state representatives
o Lobo time (employees using a new time clock system to log timesheets
and it has been an adjustment and learning curve–
