PROCEDURE
Before starting this activity, you should have read Unit 2 of the course:
Bilingualism, Globalization, and Conflict Facing Education System. Each
chapter of this unit focuses on a main topic: bilingualism, globalization and conflict.
Think about these three phenomena and how they affect Colombian education.
Based on these contents, some questions could be asked:
1. What does it mean to be bilingual in Colombia?
2. What would be the ideal scenario for a bilingual program in Colombia to
be successful?
3. What is the meaning of “Students are seen as a monolithic population”?
4. What are the main critics to the National Bilingualism Program?
5. Is education in Colombia independent to what happens worldwide?
6. How is globalization connected to education, language and policy in
Colombia?
7. What is cultural globalization and how it affects educational contexts?
8. What is the relationship between transnational agendas and education in
Colombia?

9. How does armed conflict affect education in rural and urban areas?
10. How do some children in Colombia relate to armed conflict?
11. What is the relationship between society, education and violence?
12. What could be the description of some anti-violence initiatives in
Colombia?
As you can see, the above questions can be classified in the three main topics of
Unit 2. Choose three of the above questions. Your selection can take three
questions on the same topic (bilingualism – globalization – conflict), or one
question per topic.
Show your ideas and reflections about the three selected questions in a mind map
(http://www.emeraldinsight.com/learning/study_skills/skills/mind_maps.htm). You
choose how to name the central idea of your mind map. You can even use a
creative name.
A mind map allows you to visually outline information. Different kinds of software
are found to build mind maps on the web. If possible, include images in your mind
map in order to reinforce your ideas.
If you do not know any program, you can go to http://www.mapmyself.com/#, which
is a friendly tool to build mind maps including pictures.
When you have your mind map ready, save it as a “jpg” file and post it in the forum.
In your message write a brief introduction to your mind map, indicating the three
questions you selected, and invite your partners to make comments to it.
You should make at least two meaningful comments to your peers’ mind maps.
Each comment must have at least 100 words, so simplistic replies should be
avoided.
If you have any questions, ask your tutor through the course internal mail.
