I then went to Valparaiso University in Indiana to obtain a degree in Elementary Education as well as play division one Women’s tennis on an athletic grant. I graduated with honors and received my diploma in May of 2009. Upon graduation, I have been working with a wide range of children teaching tennis as well as in private/public schools. From an early age, I have been teaching and observing in some form. In grade school, I would go to where my aunt taught and was inspired by everything she did. By high school I was teaching tennis to children of all ages, adults, and special needs individuals. Then in college, I had the wonderful opportunity to tutor as well as student teaching at the third grade level. I have volunteered coaching boy’s and girl’s high school tennis teams here in Illinois and substitute taught in various districts. Presently, I am a paraprofessional for the kindergarten level at Freeman Elementary School in Aurora as well as introducing the sport of tennis to three, four, and five year olds. Additionally, I live close to my parents and have an older sister, Jonna, who lives in Montana with her husband and three dogs. Thus, all these experiences have shaped who I am today as a teacher as well as an individual. I am thankful and lucky to have had all these opportunities and am looking forward to the ones in the future. These goals are to create a safe learning environment where I stress parent involvement, use key communication techniques, and meet the needs of all students through a variety of assessments. One, communication is key to ensuring a safe and positive learning environment. It is not just what is being said in the classroom, but also what is being done. I will make a continuous effort to make sure all verbal and nonverbal communication/interactions are appropriate and allow students to feel free in the classroom and encourage them to work openly with peers and contribute to class discussions. Second, communication with parents is also extremely important and helpful to students’ transition from home to school. Frequent newsletters informing parents what our class has been working on as well as positive notes and phone calls home will help keep parent involvement and communication in the classroom present. It is definitively vital for growth and motivation of students. Lastly, creating a classroom that engages all students and fosters learning through motivation, teaching to different learning styles as well as multiple intelligences, and the curriculum will surely form an atmosphere where students can benefit. Being able to differentiate instruction, effectively use RTI, and understand strengths and weaknesses is imperative when establishing a positive learning environment.
