Office/Conference Hours: I encourage parents to contact school guidance at (910) 522-4774 to schedule a conference or to discuss your
child’s progress at any time. I will call, email, or send progress reports periodically with academic and/or behavioral updates. Together we
can make this semester successful for us all.
Course Philosophy: To foster an environment of academic growth for students where learning leads to successful educational experiences
for all students.
Goals/Objectives of Course: The first three courses of Local Option CC Math provide a significant common core of broadly useful
mathematics for all students. They were developed to prepare students for success in college, in careers, and in daily life in contemporary
society. The program builds upon the theme of mathematics as sense –making. Through investigations of real-life contexts, students
develop a rich understanding of important mathematics that makes sense to them and which, in turn, enables them to make sense of new
situations and problems. (Course 1 Core-Plus Mathematics)
Course Description: Through “collaborative group investigations of problem situations followed by teacher- led whole-class summarizing
activities students will learn to make sense of mathematics. Each year the integrated curriculum advances students’ understanding of
mathematics along interwoven strands of algebra and functions, statistics and probability, geometry and trigonometry, and discrete
mathematics. It also emphasizes mathematical modeling including the processes of data collection, representation, interpretation,
prediction, and simulation”. Technology in many forms will be used such as the graphing calculator, computers, iPads, and Starboard.

Purnell Swett High School Freshman Academy Classroom Rules:
1. Bring all needed materials to class.
2. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
3. Obtain permission before speaking or leaving your seat.
4. Be respectful to all people and their property.
5. Food, candy, and drinks are prohibited in the classroom without permission from the teacher.
Common Sense Rules of Behavior:
1) Be in your seat with all material necessary for class when the bell rings.
2) Stay in your seat unless permission is given to do otherwise.
3) Treat others, yourself and the teacher with respect
4) FOLLOW ALL RULES IN THE STUDENT HANDBOOK!
Instructor’s Role & Responsibilities: As an educator, it is my duty to provide opportunities for my students to develop self-discipline and
respect for the rights of others while providing adequate learning opportunities for all students. In order for those duties to be fulfilled, an
inclusive classroom environment has to establish and maintain order by informing students of individual classroom behavior expectations
and maintain discipline within the classroom while protecting the rights of all students. Given this, the teacher has the responsibility to
initiate actions to remove dangerous or disruptive students and refer, in writing, a disruptive student to the principal or assistant principal
when teacher-initiated interventions have been unsuccessful or the severity of the offense determines that it is necessary for
administrative involvement.
Student's Role and Responsibilities:
1) Be on time! Tardiness disrupts the learning process and causes you trouble.
2) Be prepared! Bring your materials (notebook, tape, glue stick, coloring pencils, homework) with you daily when you come to class.
(No credit is given for homework that is at home or in your locker.)
3) Be attentive! Be ready to ask and to answer questions on the material and stay on task!
4) Be organized! Keep all handouts, notes and assignments in chronological order.
5) Be present! If a student is absent for any reason, he/she is expected to make up all missed work. It is the student’s responsibility to
see the teacher about missed work.
6) Be involved! Participate in all class activities. ***Math is active learning.***It’s like anything else in life, “you get out of it what you
put into it”
7) Be able to pass the EOC! Each student is required to pass the Math 1 state end of course test in order to receive credit for the course.
The EOC is 25% of the final course grade.
Success Skills:
1) Always participate in your group. Teamwork is essential.
2) Always ask your teammates first if you need more clarification.
3) Always do your homework. Those who do homework are successful and those who don’t usually are not.
4) Always file handouts, notes and assignments in the interactive notebook.
5) Always keep the interactive notebook up to date
6) Always Be Positive! Attitude counts!

Restroom Use: Restroom Policy
Students are given ample time between each class to go to restrooms and lockers. Students are expected to use this time wisely and take
care of their personal needs accordingly. We understand that circumstances beyond our control, such as crowded restrooms and/or other
emergencies occur. With this in mind, additional restroom breaks will be granted ONLY at the discretion of the teacher. Students are given
3 emergency restroom passes a semester; so it is important to use them wisely.
Calculator Use & Care: Calculators will be used in the class. Students will be expected to use calculators carefully and when finished, turn
them off and put the cover back on and place them in their proper place. Class will not be dismissed until all calculators are accounted for.
Calculators will not be allowed outside of class under any circumstances.
Textbooks will be an in-class resource.
Attendance: Students must not be absent more than 5 days. If they are, it is their responsibility to go to Saturday School from 8:00-1:00
to make up missed days. When students miss 2 days their names will be reported to YDS/Social Worker and assigned After-School
Intervention.
Learning Centers: Held on Tuesday and Thursday in my classroom from 3:10-4:00. Transportation is provided for all students attending.
Learning centers are utilized only for tutoring, re-teaching, and remediation.
Reteach/Retesting Policy: If a student fails a test, he or she may retest once within two scheduled Learning Centers from the date of
receiving the failing grade. Students present during a regular scheduled test may not opt out of taking the test with the intent of taking it
during Learning Centers. The bus will transport your child home or you can provide them transportation after the Learning Centers.
Students guilty of cheating will be given a zero with no opportunity to retest.
Progress Reports: Reports will be sent home a minimum of four times every grading period (9wks.) and are required to be signed by
parents and returned. If applicable, grades can be accessed through the Parent Portal of the statewide PowerSchool Education System.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty of any variety will not be tolerated. Any instance where there is probable cause of cheating,
the grade given for the assignment/test etc… will be a zero and there will be no opportunity for make-up. Parents will be contacted and
informed of the situation.
