This course presents a detailed analysis of the most clinically significant formula
and their relationships to differentiation of patterns and disease etiologies. The
categories of formulas addressed in this course form the basis for the student’s
future development as an Herbalist. Understanding these formulas will provide a
platform from which to begin formula writing. The course will cover
approximately 63 classical herbal formulas, with a detailed analysis of the
functions and properties of the formulae, individual herbs in each formula, the
way herbs work together in the formula, the clinical applications of each formula,
and various ways to modify in response to changes in the patient’s disease pattern.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to describe the general signs, symptoms, properties, functions,
cautions, and contraindications associated with each formula studied this term.
2. Students will be able to recite the individual herbs in each formula
3. Students will understand how to use Classic formula in a Western Medical setting.
4. Students will be able to analyze cases for essential differentiation of patterns to determine
which classical formula is appropriate for each case.
5. Students will be able to describe modification needed in each formula to fit the
individual condition of a patient.

WEEKLY TOPICS LEARNING OBJECTIVES, AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be able to describe the functions, indications including signs and symptoms,
properties, cautions and contraindications of the formula. Students will be able to visually
identify these formula and the individual herbs in them, give the Chinese and/or Latin names,
and describe how the individual herbs work in the formulas. Students will be able to discuss
modifications that may be needed to address various conditions, and be able to apply the
formulas to a wide range of clinical cases.
