FLOODING IN CHINA AND IN INDIA INFORMATION SHEET: When the water level becomes higher than its banks or its dams, the water spills over and there will be flooding. Floods are serious problems in India and China. Every year hundreds die due to flooding in these two countries. Causes of Flooding: 1. Heavy rainfall during the Monsoon rainy season greatly raises the water level. Too much rain coming in too short a time causes the rivers to become full and then overflow. 2. Flooding is also caused by deforestation. Without trees, plants, and bushes to soak up the water it runs off quickly and causes floods. With less vegetation to protect the soil, it is quickly washed into river. This raises the river bed, so the river overflows its banks more easily. 3. Over-grazing/over-farming lead to erosion which raises the river bed and causes it to overflow. Effects of Flooding: 1. Drowning 2. Houses washed away 3. Disease (This happens after the flood because, as the garbage and dead people and animals in the water decompose, the water becomes filled with disease-causing bacteria.) AIR POLLUTION IN CHINA AND INDIA When harmful substances are put into the air, we say that air pollution has occurred. China and India are in a seriously dangerous situation in the fight against air pollution. Causes of Air Pollution: 1. The burning of biomass fuel for energy is a major cause of air pollution. Biomass fuel is any living plant matter (trees, limbs, leaves, straw, etc.) that is burned to create energy for heating or cooking. The smoke from burning biomass fuel pollutes the air. 2. The burning of coal for energy is also a major cause of air pollution. Coal is a dark, rocklike material that is dug up from out of the ground and can be burned to create energy for heating or cooking. The smoke from burning coal pollutes the air. 3. Exhaust from old diesel motors is another major cause of air pollution. There are no regulations on vehicle exhaust in China or India, and many of the vehicles are old and poorly maintained. These motors give off huge amounts of exhaust filled with sulfur which pollutes the air. Effects of Air Pollution: 1. Respiratory disorders (breathing problems) 2. Contaminated drinking water (from acid rain) 3. Erosion of buildings (from acid rain) AIR POLLUTION IN CHINA AND INDIA When harmful substances are put into the air, we say that air pollution has occurred. Vocabulary: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Flood – when water overflows onto land that is normally dry Monsoon rain – heavy rains that fall in Asia as a result of the monsoon wind River bed - the bottom of a river Erosion – the wearing away of a surface due to natural forces such as rain, wind, etc. Drowning – death caused from water filling the lungs Biomass fuel – living plant matter (trees, leaves, sticks, etc.) that are burned for energy Coal – a dark, rock-like material found underground that can be burned for energy Respiratory disorders – breathing problems Acid rain – rain that is contaminated with dangerous, strong chemicals because of the pollution that gets into it in the air Use the information sheet to answer the following.
