Transitional bilingual/late exit is a bilingual program model in which academic growth is accelerated through cognitively challenging academic work in the student's first language along with meaningful academic content taught through the student's second language, English. The goal is to promote high levels of academic achievement and full academic language proficiency in the student’s first language and English. Dual Language instructional components may also be implemented in the transitional bilingual/late exit model. The Austin Health and Physical Education Office and Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) recommend that 10-15 minutes of daily unstructured recess time be scheduled in addition to the required WOW minutes. 2-3 minute Brain Breaks are also recommended to enhance student learning.
