Real Ale & Cider Tram Trail
Nottingham’s tram network offers the possibility of three pub crawls along the routes Market
Square to Toton Lane, Market Square to Clifton South, and Market Square to Hucknall. A
day ticket can be bought from the platform ticket machines. Only travel passes issued for
Nottinghamshire are accepted and you must ‘touch in’ at the reader before boarding. Check
opening hours on What Pub before venturing out to avoid disappointment. Pubs are briefly
described near their respective tram stop.
Route 1 Market Square to Toton Lane
Market Square
There are a number of pubs within walking distance of the square. Four are described below
to get you started.
BELL INN 18 Angel Row NG1 6HL
One of the oldest pubs in the country, now owned by Greene King. Past landlords names
are listed just below ceiling level in the main back bar, where the main range of beers is sold.
Two much smaller side rooms also boast their own bar, where a different beer may be
available than in the main room. The old well, in the main bar, has been glassed over, and is
now part of the serving area. GK beers plus many guests, usually including Nottingham
Brewery beers, and real cider.
BANK 8-9 Beastmarket Hill NG1 6FB
Popular pub offering value food near Market Square. A single open plan bar offers some
sense of intimacy at quieter times, but during meal times and sports can get busy leading to
standing room only. Cask range can include some interesting guests, but largely follows
national brands.
NED LUDD 27 Friar Lane NG1 6DA
Named after the original Luddite, this former tapas bar became a 'Craft' beer pub, with four
handpumps, and several beer fonts. However, it is now owned by Nottingham Brewery with
three of their beers usually on sale plus a guest, and more handpumps likely to be added
shortly.
THE JOSEPH ELSE South Parade, Market Square NG1 2JS.
Wetherspoon pub offering up to 14 beers and real cider, next to the tram stop.
Lace Market
CROSS KEYS 15 Byard Lane NG1 2GJ.
This split-level pub has a very relaxed atmosphere with lots of natural light, high ceilings and
wooden floorboards.4 beers from Navigation Brewery are regulars along with 3 guests.
Railway Station
VAT & FIDDLE Queens Bridge Road NG2 1NB.
200 yards from the railway station. Castle Rock Brewery tap with 12 hand pulls. Full range of
Castle Rock plus occasional guests and real cider.
Gregory Street
BOAT INN Priory Street Dunkirk NG7 2NX Small pub located on a side street off the busy
Abbey Street, this is a former Home Ales pub. Deuchars IPA, Wells Bombardier, ‘Quaffing Ale’
brewed for the pub and three guests are on offer.
JOHNSONS ARMS 59 Abbey Street Lenton NG7 2NZ
Popular two-room pub close to the University of Nottingham and QMC hospital, this former
Shipstones house retains the original etched windows, complemented by a green-tiled
frontage. Adnams Bitter, Sharps Doom bar and three guests available as well as a Weston’s
cider.
WHITE HART 29 Gregory Street Lenton NG7 2LT
Former Hardys and Hansons pub, now owned by Greene King serving four beers from their
range.
University
DUNKIRK INN 71 Montpelier Rd Dunkirk NG7 2JY
10 minutes’ walk along University Boulevard towards town, then right down Lace Street
brings you to this modern open plan pub popular with students and locals serving three
beers from Nottingham Brewery.
Beeston
WHITE LION BAR & KITCHEN 24 Middle Street Beeston NG9 1FX
Gastro pub with an increasing number of cask ales. A food-oriented pub during the
day/evening. Meals are produced using food from local suppliers. Three beers from
Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh plus three guests from the Theakston/Heineken range are
on offer.
STAR INN Middle Street Beeston NG9 1FX
Former Shipstones pub (note the front windows), restored beyond its former glory offering
nine cask ales at all times alongside a wide selection of whiskies and wines.
LAST POST 6a Chilwell Road Beeston NG9 1AA
Large open-plan, single bar corner pub, with the typical Weatherspoon’s décor and a large
range of beers and ciders from far and wide.
CROWN INN Church Street Beeston NG9 1FY
An alehouse has stood on this Grade-II listed site since 1830. Since restoration by Everards,
its range of ales has expanded to 14, mostly from smaller breweries, and includes real cider,
leading to it winning East Midlands Pub of the Year in 2010 and 2011.
Chilwell Road
HOP POLE 2 High Road Chilwell NG9 4AE
Two-roomed pub dating back to 1870 that straddles the Chilwell/Beeston border. Popular
with locals, with an emphasis on beer in a friendly environment. Can be up to six ales on
offer with many from local microbreweries. Weston’s Old Rosie cider is also available.
CHEQUERS INN 17 High Road Chilwell NG9 4AF
Early 20th century coaching inn on the Chilwell/Beeston border. Features include timbered
gables and modern etched windows. Four beers from national breweries.
Bramcote Lane
DOUBLE TOP Bramcote Lane Chilwell NG9 5EL
A community local where sports, both played and watched, are popular. Deuchars IPA is the
regular beer.

Clifton Centre
PEACOCK Southchurch Drive Clifton NG11 9FB
This is part of the 'Eat and Meet' branded Greene King pubs. The large brick building in the
shopping precinct has prominent maroon painted sign and trim. Inside the U shaped open
plan interior has a drinking area with pool table and TV to the left and a light airy comfortable
lounge area for diners to the right. GK beers on offer.

Royal Centre
LANGTRY’S 4 South Sherwood Street NG1 4BY
Langtry's took on its current name in 1981 celebrating famed Victorian starlet Lillie Langtry.
Photographs and playbills from her career adorn the walls and delight pre-theatre patrons for
the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall in the evenings. A huge selection of beers and
ciders is always on offer.
THREE CROWNS 51 Upper Parliament Street NG1 6LD
Opened June 2014 as a modern pub, selling up to six real ales, mostly national brands. The
ground floor is divided into several booths, with sport on TV prominent.
STAGE 7a Wollaton Street NG1 5FW
Pub near the Theatre Royal, raised from street level on Parliament Street entrance. A side
bar runs to the rear entrance on Wollaton Street while ample seating is provided away from
the bar. Three regular beers plus one changing guest.
Nottingham Trent University
A short walk downhill and right into Peel St brings you to the
Gooseberry Bush 5 Peel Street NG1 4GL
Weatherspoon’s frequented by students from the nearby Trent University. This pub serves 2
regular Greene King beers plus 4 changing beers.
Shipstone Street.
LION INN 44 Mosley Street New Basford NG7 7FQ
This freehouse has a large range of cask ales from both local and national breweries. The
central bar features real cider and 'craft' keg beer, as well as numerous hand pumps. The
décor is bare brick walls, wooden floors, with plenty of seating featuring heavy iron chairs
with traditional upholstery.
HORSE AND GROOM 462 Radford Road New Basford NG7 7EA
Popular corner pub situated a few yards away from the defunct Shipstones Brewery. The
pub was once the social club for the brewery. The main entrance is via steps to the front
door, but there is disabled access towards the rear on request. Although small, the pub has
several distinct areas on two levels, including a function room, each with its own character.
The bar accommodates nine hand pumps serving mainly microbrewery beers, including a
mild, and at least one local guest.
Opposite the tram stop you will notice the Black Iris Brewery unit
Basford
FOX & CROWN 33 Church Street Old Basford NG6 0GA
This pub is the brewery tap for the adjacent Alcazar Brewery. On arrival you notice the large
Fox & Crown mural depicting Sherwood Forest in the 13th Century. Many beers from the
Alcazar stable.
Bulwell
WILLIAM PEVERIL 259 Main Street Bulwell NG6 8EZ
A bit of a trek down the main street to this Wetherspoon conversion with a high vaulted roof
over main room, with clerestory windows. Natural oak timber and cream painted interior, with
a large central room fronted by long single bar, with a number of smaller rooms leading off.
Usual range of well priced ales and cider on offer.
Bulwell Forest
NEWSTEAD ABBEY St Albans Road Bulwell NG6 9JS
Built in the 1880s, this pub has two large rooms downstairs (one with a pool table), and a
function room upstairs. Listed as a pub of historical interest. Two regular beers available.
Butlers Hill
THE BOWMAN Nottingham Road Hucknall NG15 7PY
Large comfortable pub divided into a number of mainly eating areas. Located on the
Nottingham side of Hucknall and part of the 'Flaming grill' franchise. The pub normally has
two changing cask beers and boasts a number of sports TV screens.

PLOUGH AND HARROW High Street Hucknall NG15 7HJ
Extensively renovated and improved in September 2015. Carpeted throughout, the single
roomed pub has been cleverly arranged so that there are a number of separate drinking
areas. TV screens abound but are normally on mute to allow conversation to take place, with
the aim of creating a traditional community ale house. Four changing beers and real cider
available.
PILGRIM OAK 44-46 High Street, Hucknall.NG15 7AX
Opened in 1998, this Wetherspoons pub stands opposite Watnall Road, in the heart of Hucknall
town centre. One of its LocAle’s is a house beer brewed by Lincoln Green brewery
BEER SHACK 1 Derbyshire Lane Hucknall NG15 7JX
Hucknall's only micro-pub. This former shop has been converted to a friendly, music free
real ale and cider pub. The emphasis is on conversation and good company. The unique
Flying Bedstead pub sign (from the nearby pub that closed by Greene King shortly before
the Beer Shack opened) is displayed on one wall. Five changing beers and real cider. 2014
East Midlands Cider Pub of the Year.
GREEN DRAGON Watnall Road, Hucknall. NG15 7JW
Tastefully renovated in 2012, this pub has both bar and lounge areas despite being open plan.
The bar contains the pool table and dartboard whilst the lounge is split level, with the emphasis
on comfort. A number of pictures depicting Hucknall's past adorn the walls. At the front is a
tarmacked patio area and a separate family/function room is at the side. Wednesday night is quiz
night with a music quiz on Sundays. Up to five real ales, including a LocAle and 15p a pint
CAMRA discount offered.
