Ore Deposits, Magmatism and Precambrian Geology of Finland Field Trip July 2014 — First Announcement and Prelimininary Program Field Excursion Module Mineral Resources 651-4036-00L, jointly organized with SEG Student Chapter of ETH Zurich. In case of overbooking, precedence will be given to successful participants of Ore Deposits I & II courses. Date and duration: 14 days in the period 10. July to 29. July (depending on mine access) Maximum number of participants: 24 (limited by mine visits and car transport) Travel: direct flight to Helsinki (FINNAIR, 400 Fr return ticket), renting 3 minivans Costs: ca. 1600 Fr per person in total, of which ETH will pay 40% for registered MSc and PhD students; some additional funding from SEG, Data Metallogenica and Scandinavian industry will be requested, so that total cost for students will hopefully be below CHF 800. Program: Ore deposits of the Fennoscandian Shield (Finland, some at the Swedish border) Rapakivi granites + anortozites of southern Finland – decoration stones quarries Diamondiferous kimberlites – prospects, core Carbonatites - industrial minerals, phosphorus (Siilinjarvi open pit) Layered mafic intrusions – chromite (Kemi underground mine) and PGE + Ni prospects of Lapland Greenstone belt Orogenic gold and non-traditional IOCG deposits – Kuusamo area test pits, Suurikuussiko mine, Pahtavaara mine, Finnish Gold Line (Jokisivu and Orivesi mine), Outokumpu Cu deposit (closed mine, museum) Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Zn, Pb, Cu deposits of Finnish Northwest (Pyhasalmi underground mine and prospects) Fe-skarns of Pajala-Kolari district (Tapuli mine and several closed mines and prospects) And couple of additional localities as surprise (such as The oldest rock of Europe,…) Additional activities planned: Visit to Helsinki University where introductory lecture to Scandinavian geology will be organized Visit to drill core repository of GTK (Geological Survey of Finland) in Espoo – alkaline rocks display (kimberlites) Visit to GTK office in Rovaniemi – lecture on aims and work of geological survey, possible visit to drill core repository Core logging practical for students organized by Katerina + Dragon Mining Ltd in the core repository in Outokumpu (geotechnical + petrological + analytical approach to core description) Organisation: Katerina Schlöglova & Christoph A.
