Coaches Sue Welker, Naperville Waves: Head Coach Sue is a veteran of the 2013 US Masters Swimming High Performance Camp, and has taken on the role of HPC Head Coach this year. She is the head coach and founder in 1999 of the Naperville Waves Swim Club. Sue has been a life-long swimmer since the age of 4 and swam at the University of Iowa. Her passion is coaching. She spent several summers coaching swimming as a teen and resumed coaching triathlon, swimming and strength full-time in 1995 after working as a nurse for 15 years. As an athlete, Sue has raced all distances of triathlons completing two Ironmans and gaining All America status in both triathlon and swimming. Sue has coached at the age group level and ran a large and successful high school program, but now focuses her energy on adults of all ages and abilities. The Naperville Waves has over 220 swimmers with 26 weekly practices. The team has won five state Championships and has multiple national champions. She is currently certified with ASCA, ACE Personal Trainer, and Pilates; was previously certified with USAT and is a registered nurse. Sue received the JC’s Distinguished Service award in 2000 and has been named Illinois Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2005, and USMS National Coach of the Year in 2006. She focuses on developing swimmers for competition, triathlons, and general fitness through proper technique, education, and motivation. As a Masters swim competitor herself, she is the 2010 National Champion in the 50 and 100 Fly, as well as a multi-Top Ten National and World-Ranked swimmer. Susan was named the 2008 USMS National Coach of the Year. She was also one of the original authors and presenters of the USMS Coach Certification Courses. Susan has been a presenter at several SwimFest events, Legends of Texas, and ASCA World Clinics. She continues to conduct swimming clinics around the country while sharing her knowledge of more than 30 years of coaching. Coach Latella has a decade of experience training Masters swimmers nationally and abroad. Dominic is currently an adjunct professor of Health and Fitness at American University. He also works with swimming rehabilitation of Paralympic military athletes in Washington, DC. Coach Latella focuses on execution of appropriate swimming technique to achieve not only improved efficiency and propulsion, but also to prevent injury. Coach Latella’s philosophy emphasizes proper technique, so that a swimmer can achieve best times while optimizing performance for a lifetime of swimming. In 1996, CJ joined the Anderson Barracuda program as the co-founder and first Masters Coach, and PreCompetitive Coach. He has had 20 years of successful coaching experience and served as the United States Masters Swimming Corporate Secretary from 2009 to 2013. Currently, CJ serves as the At-Large Director for the Great Lakes Zone. Coach Rushman began competitive swimming at age six, which led him to become an accomplished swimmer at the University of Cincinnati, where he was a four-year member of their varsity swimming team and member of their National Independent Conference Team Champions in 1992 and 1993. As a Masters swimmer, CJ has placed in the USMS Top Ten 22 times and has won 15 YMCA Masters Titles. Coach Rushman continues to demonstrate his dedication and passion for swimming as a Swimming Official, both for the YMCA and USA Swimming.
