Present Tense Conjugation (Regular –AR, -ER, & -IR Verbs)
1. In English VERBS are words that express actions or states of being. The endings of most verbs do not change, unless
the subject is he, she, it or a single person such as Rosa or my friend. Since other forms have no endings that tell who
the doer is, the subject pronouns cannot be left out.
EXAMPLES:
I clean the bathroom on Monday, but you clean the bathroom on Tuesday.
He washes the dishes and she takes out the trash.
2. In Spanish every verb has a stem, which tells the meaning of the verb. Verb endings change according to the subject.
For this reason, the subject pronouns are often left out. Changing the endings is called conjugating the verb. Her is how
to conjugate verbs in the present tense:
FOUR STEPS TO CONJGUATING:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Look to see if the verb ends in –ar, -er, -ir
Look at the subject. Decide who is doing the action.
Cut off the –ar,-er, or –ir. Now you have the stem.
Add the appropriate ending that matches the subject.
Here are the appropriate present tense verb endings.
